Ohio Wesleyan 4, Case Reserve 3

March 29, 2009

[ Amanda Sanders ]Junior outfielder Amanda Sanders (Lima/Bath) singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Ohio Wesleyan edged Case Reserve to complete a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at Margaret Sagan Field.

In the opener, junior lefthander Rachel Seibel (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) fired a 2-hitter and sophomore shortstop Kaylie Titus (East Hampton, N.Y.) scored twice to help the Bishops take the win.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener. Titus led off with a grounder to Spartan third baseman Kaeleen Boden, but first baseman Anneliese Fetterman shuffled her feet while taking the throw from Boden, and Titus was called safe on the play. One out later, sophomore catcher Sarah Truchan (Westfield Center/Brunswick) walked and junior second baseman Devon Walker (Baltimore/Watkins Memorial) singled up the middle to load the bases. Junior outfielder Krystle Skaziak (Dublin/Scioto) singled through the right side to put the Bishops ahead to stay before junior first baseman Emily Bradley (Columbus/Upper Arlington) was hit by a pitch, forcing home Truchan to make it 2-0.

The Bishops added a run in the fifth as Titus singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by junior third baseman Rita Cook (Sidney/Fairlawn).

Case Reserve closed to within 3-1 in the sixth. Mary Kruszka led off with a walk and moved to second when Lauren Wolz's drive to center popped out of the glove of Skaziak for an error. Ruthe Sagartz singled past a diving Walker to score Kruszka, and while Boden coaxed a walk to load the bases with 2 out, Seibel got out of the inning without any further trouble.

Seibel struck out 9 and walked 5 in working the complete game.

Sagartz pitched the complete game for CWRU, striking out 3 and walking 4.

In the nightcap, the Spartans struck quickly as Angel Rice led off with a single. Beth Andrasik followed with a sacrifice, with Rice advancing all the way to third when the Bishops left the bag uncovered. Rice then scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 CWRU lead.

Freshman righthander Lauren McIntire (Marysville/Buckeye Valley) found a groove after that, however, retiring the next 12 Spartan hitters after Rice's leadoff hit.

Meanwhile, the Bishops took the lead with 2 runs in the second. Sophomore first baseman Tara VanVranken (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) led off with a walk, and a walk to Cook and a Truchan single loaded the bases. Walker followed with a blooper over the head of Fetterman that went for an infield single, scoring VanVranken, and Skaziak singled home Cook for a 2-1 Bishop lead.

Titus lined a 2-out double and scored on Cook's single as the Bishops stretched the lead to 3-1 in the third.

The Spartans caught up to McIntire in the fifth, with Sagartz leading off with a single and Ianna Wasser sending a shot over the leftfield fence to tie the game at 3-3.

That deadlock stood until the bottom of the seventh, when Bradley led off with a single, stole second, and scored on Sanders's single up the middle.

Walker had 2 hits in each end of the doubleheader.

Freshman righthander Britt Rhea (Mount Vernon), who pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings for the Bishops, was credited with the win in relief.

Sagartz pitched the complete game for CWRU.
