![]() Ohio Wesleyan 10, Kenyon 2 April 1, 2009 In the nightcap, the Ladies took an early lead, held off a Bishop rally, and pulled away in the late innings to salvage a split. Kenyon took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning of the opener when Sara Sullivan's bases-loaded single plated a pair of runs. The Bishops answered in the bottom of the inning as sophomore first baseman Tara VanVranken (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) led off with a double and scored on a one-out single by junior third baseman Rita Cook (Sidney/Fairlawn). One out later, junior second baseman Devon Walker (Baltimore/Watkins Memorial) singled up the middle and junior outfielder Krystle Skaziak (Dublin/Scioto) followed with a single to score Cook and tie the game at 2-2. After junior first baseman Emily Bradley (Columbus/Upper Arlington) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Sanders promptly cleared them with a shot down the leftfield line, giving the Bishops a 6-2 lead. Ohio Wesleyan broke the game open in the fourth, loading the bases on a single by sophomore catcher Sarah Truchan (Westfield Center/Brunswick), a single by Skaziak and a walk to Bradley. Freshman third baseman Ashley Allen (Richwood/North Union) singled to left for one run, with Skaziak and Bradley scoring when Kenyon leftfielder Ellen Witkowski misplayed the ball. VanVranken followed with a single to score Allen for a 10-2 Bishop lead. Junior lefthander Rachel Seibel (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) pitched the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan, striking out 4 and walking none. Brittany Vanegas was the starting and losing pitcher for Kenyon. In the nightcap, Witkowski's 3-run homer in the first inning gave the Ladies an early lead. Ohio Wesleyan got one run back in the bottom of the inning on Sanders's RBI single, but Kenyon's Jenny Dillon led off the top of the second with a solo shot, restoring the Ladies' 3-run lead and chasing freshman righthander Lauren McIntire (Marysville/Buckeye Valley). The Bishops closed the deficit to 4-3 in the third, with Sanders leading off with a double and scoring on a throwing error by Kenyon third baseman Kelly Adams on Allen's grounder. Cook followed with a single, scoring Allen. Kenyon added 3 runs in the fifth, with Vanegas's RBI double and a 2-run single by Dillon the big hits, and tacked on 4 more runs in the sixth, with Witkowski and Dillon each driving in a run. Sanders went 3-for-4 and scored twice to highlight the Bishop offense. McIntire was charged with the loss for Ohio Wesleyan. Freshman righthander Britt Rhea (Mount Vernon) pitched 4.0 innings in relief, and Seibel came on to pitch the sixth and the seventh. Dillon pitched the complete game for Kenyon, striking out 3 and walking 1, and helped her own cause by going 3-for-3 with 4 RBI. Witkowski also drove in 4 runs as part of a 2-for-3 outing, and Brianna LaChusa was 4-for-4 for the Ladies. |
