Mount Union 10, Ohio Wesleyan 1

April 13, 2009

Mount Union's Stephanie Cain singled in the go-ahead run as the Purple Raiders struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge Ohio Wesleyan in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader on Monday in Alliance.

In the nightcap, Anna Horning and Jill Rader slammed 2-run homers to help Mount Union complete the sweep.

Junior lefthander Rachel Seibel (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) and Mount Union's Bre Willis traded zeroes through the first 5 innings of the opener. Seibel pitched her way out of trouble in the fourth, stranding 2 runners after a leadoff double by Megan Simons. Willis, meanwhile, allowed singles in each of the first 3 innings but a pair of double plays helped the Purple Raiders keep the Bishops off the scoreboard.

The Purple Raiders took the lead in the sixth when Mara Palombaro led off with a single, and one out later, Ashley Henriques doubled Palombaro to third. Seibel came back to retire Rader for the second out, but Cain singled home Palombaro to end the scoreless deadlock, and Henriques added an insurance run by scoring on a wild pitch.

Seibel pitched the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan, while Willis collected the win for the Purple Raiders.

Mount Union took a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap with the help of Palombaro's RBI double and a 2-run single by Amanda Pool.

Horning's 2-run homer in the second increased the Mount Union lead to 6-0.

Ohio Wesleyan got one run back in the top of the third as junior second baseman Devon Walker (Baltimore/Watkins Memorial) led off with a double and junior outfielder Krystle Skaziak (Dublin/Scioto) and junior first baseman Emily Bradley (Columbus/Upper Arlington) followed with singles.

Horning and Simons collected RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth, and Rader's 2-run homer in the fifth provided the winning margin for the Purple Raiders.

Freshman righthander Lauren McIntire (Marysville/Buckeye Valley) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.

Gia Mauer pitched the complete game for Mount Union.
