![]() Wooster 4, Ohio Wesleyan 3 April 18, 2009 In the opener, Wooster's Rachel Gaines delivered a 2-run single in the fifth inning to give the Fighting Scots the win. Wooster had taken a 3-1 lead in the nightcap, breaking a 1-1 tie on Lauren Sargi's RBI single in the third and adding a run on Andrea Kelley's RBI single in the fifth. Sophomore outfielder Tara VanVranken (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) led off the Bishop sixth with a single, and sophomore shortstop Kaylie Titus (East Hampton, N.Y.) followed with a single, with VanVranken coming around to score when Wooster leftfielder Rachel Frank misplayed the ball. Freshman catcher Nikka Bonamase (Canfield/Youngstown Ursuline) then delivered a pinch-hit double to tie the game at 3-3 before Truchan doubled home Bonamase to put the Bishops ahead to stay. Junior outfielder Sarah Cook (Sidney/Fairlawn) followed with a triple, scoring Truchan, and Cook came in to score on a fielder's choice by junior first baseman Emily Bradley (Columbus/Upper Arlington). The big inning made a winner of freshman righthander Britt Rhea (Mount Vernon), who struck out 3 and walked 2 in pitching the complete game. Truchan went 2-for-2 for the Bishops, while Bradley drove in 2 runs, wiping out a 1-0 deficit with a first-inning home run. Katie Pifer was the starting and losing pitcher for Wooster. In the opener, Truchan crushed a 2-run homer to left, spotting the Bishops to a 2-0 lead, but Wooster answered with a 2-run single by Kelley in the top of the third. Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the bottom of the inning as junior outfielder Krystle Skaziak (Dublin/Scioto) led off with a walk and moved to second on Bradley's bunt single. Freshman third baseman Ashley Allen (Richwood/North Union) walked to load the bases and VanVranken singled to left, scoring Skaziak. Kim Skully led off the Wooster fifth with a double, and Priscilla Staples reached on a fielder's choice. After Kelley walked to load the bases, Gaines singled to right to drive in the tying and go-ahead runs. The Bishops threatened in the sixth, opening the inning with singles by Allen and VanVranken, but Wooster pitcher Kelley retired the next 3 hitters to get out of the inning unscathed. VanVranken was 3-for-3 to highlight the Bishop offense. Junior lefthander Rachel Seibel (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan. She struck out 10 and walked 2. Kelley worked the complete game for Wooster, fanning 5 and walking 2. |
