[ Tara VanVranken ]Sophomore outfielder Tara VanVranken (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) knocked in the go-ahead run to highlight a 4-for-4 effort and junior lefthander Rachel Seibel (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) twirled a 7-hit shutout as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Denison in the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Thursday in Granville.

In the opener, freshman third baseman Ashley Allen (Richwood/North Union) plated a run to bring the Bishops within 3-2, but the Big Red stranded the go-ahead run on base to eke out a win.

The nightcap saw the Bishops score all the runs Seibel would need in the first inning. With one out, junior outfielder Amanda Sanders (Lima/Bath), Allen, and VanVranken lined consecutive singles to give the Bishops a 1-0 lead. Sophomore shortstop Kaylie Titus (East Hampton, N.Y.) then reached on a throwing error by Denison first baseman Emily Croll, with 2 runs scoring on the play.

Seibel stranded 2 runners in the first, got an inning-ending double play in the third, stranded 2 runners in the fourth. She finished with 3 strikeouts and a walk.

VanVranken went 4-for-4, while Sanders was 2-for-4.

Sam Rumschlag was the starting and losing pitcher for Denison.

The Bishops took a 1-0 lead in the opener when VanVranken opened the fourth by reaching second base on an error by Big Red leftfielder Hannah Price. Titus followed with a single up the middle, scoring VanVranken. One out later, sophomore catcher Sarah Truchan (Westfield Center/Brunswick) walked, but Denison starter Leslie Brenner got out of the inning without any further damage.

Denison answered in the bottom of the inning as Lauren Lynn led off with a walk. One out later, Brie Berkopec launched a homer to centerfield to give the Big Red a 2-1 lead.

The Big Red added a run in the sixth on a double by Alex Murray and a 2-out single by Croll.

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 3-2 in the top of the seventh as junior first baseman Emily Bradley (Columbus/Upper Arlington) tripled with one out and scored on Allen's 2-out single. VanVranken followed with a walk to move the tying run into scoring position, but Brenner got Titus to line out to end the game.

Seibel fanned 7 and walked 2 in working the complete game.

Brenner struck out 1 and walked 3 for the Big Red.
