Hiram 3, Ohio Wesleyan 1
Hiram 7, Ohio Wesleyan 3

April 24, 2009

Hiram rallied for a win in the opener, then took an early lead and held on for a win to complete a sweep of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader from Ohio Wesleyan on Friday. The twinbill, originally scheduled to be played at Hiram, was played at Garfield High School in Garrettsville because of unplayable field conditions at Hiram.

The opener featured a pitching duel between junior lefthander Rachel Seibel (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) and Hiram's Whitney Dropsey. Seibel was masterful, allowing the Terriers only a bunt single by Kristen Cooney during the first 5.0 innings. Dropsey, meanwhile, was just as effective, stranding a pair of Ohio Wesleyan runners in the first and facing the minimum in the second, third, and fourth frames.

The Bishops took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when junior third baseman Rita Cook (Sidney/Fairlawn) led off with a single. Freshman outfielder Abby Walsh (Millville, Mass./Blackstone-Millville), pinch-running for Cook, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by junior outfielder Krystle Skaziak (Dublin/Scioto). Skaziak made it all the way to third on the play, but was stranded there when junior first baseman Emily Bradley (Columbus/Upper Arlington) struck out to end the inning.

That run looked like it would be enough for Seibel, who retired the Terriers in order in the fifth and set down the first 2 batters in the sixth. Stephanie Zunic kept the inning going with a single, and a single by Megan Samuel and a walk to Dropsey loaded the bases for Chastine Romanello, who singled in Zunic to tie the game. Rosie Frank followed with a drive to center that Skaziak misplayed for an error, with 2 runs scoring on the play to give Hiram a 3-1 lead.

Cook led off the Bishop seventh by reaching on an error by Hiram second baseman Frank, but Dropsey got sophomore shortstop Kaylie Titus (East Hampton, N.Y.) to bounce into a double play, then fanned sophomore catcher Sarah Truchan (Westfield Center/Brunswick) to end the game.

Seibel finished with a 4-hitter, striking out 3 and walking 1.

In the nightcap, the Terriers took a 5-0 lead in the second with the help of a 2-run homer by Jena Ervin and a 2-run single by Frank, then added single runs in the third and fourth frames.

Ohio Wesleyan rallied with 2 runs in the fifth, with Truchan leading off with a single before Bradley's 2-out double and a 2-out single by junior outfielder Amanda Sanders (Lima/Bath) knocked in runs.

Freshman third baseman Ashley Allen (Richwood/North Union) cracked a leadoff double in the sixth, chasing Hiram starter Sarah Padilla, and while junior outfielder Sarah Cook (Sidney/Fairlawn) did touch Dropsey for a single to score Allen, that would be as close as the Bishops would come.

Seibel was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.

Padilla struck out 5 and walked 1 for the Terriers, and Dropsey struck out 4 in her 2.0 innings of relief.
