Gatz, Bishop Swimming Teams
Receive Academic Honors

[ David Gatz ]Junior David Gatz (Delaware/Hayes) and the Ohio Wesleyan University men's and women's swimming teams received academic honors from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, it was announced by the CSCAA.

Ohio Wesleyan ranked fifth among NCAA Division III teams in combined overall grade point averages for men's and women's teams. The Battling Bishops compiled a 3.392 overall grade point average to rank behind Colorado College (3.474), New York University (3.450), Washington & Lee (3.444) and Washington (Mo.) (3.406).

The Battling Bishop men's team ranked third among NCAA Division III teams with a 3.400 overall grade point average, while the Ohio Wesleyan women's team ranked 30th with an overall grade point average of 3.385. The combined team average was computed by taking the average of those two figures.

Gatz received individual academic honors from the CSCAA. Gatz is a pre-medicine and biochemistry major with a cumulative grade point average of 3.98.

Gatz also was a second-team Academic All-America® selection on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® teams last spring. He earned All-America honors in the 100 and 200 breaststroke in 2008, becoming Ohio Wesleyan's first All-American since 1995. He won North Coast Athletic Conference titles in both events, becoming the Bishops' first individual conference champion since 1994, and is only the second Ohio Wesleyan men's swimmer to win multiple events at the NCAC championship meet.
