[ Kristin Kovach ]Junior outside hitter Kristin Kovach (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) and sophomore outside hitter Alexa Bean (Columbus/Upper Arlington) led Ohio Wesleyan on the first day of the Hornet Invitational, hosted by Kalamazoo College on Friday in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Ohio Wesleyan opened tournament play against eventual champion Manchester and played well against the Spartans, falling 27-25 in the second set and 25-20 in the third after a 25-14 verdict in the first set.

Kovach led the Bishops with 10 kills and 3 service aces, while Bean contributed 9 kills. Sophomore setter Sarah Marshall (Lima/Senior) dished out a team-leading 24 assists. Defensive standouts included senior middle hitter Janna Dagley (Beavercreek) and sophomore outside hitter Stacey Tighe (Lewis Center/Olentangy), who shared the team lead with 2 blocks apiece, and junior libero Katie Schlaudt (Holland, Mich.), who had a team-high 9 digs.

In the Bishops' second match of the day, Trine took a straight-set decision by scores of 25-15, 25-14, 25-17.

Bean compiled team bests of 7 kills and 10 digs, Marshall led the Bishops with 14 assists, and Kovach recorded a team-leading 2 blocks.

The Hornet Invitational continues on Saturday in Kalamazoo, Mich.
