Oct. 8, 2008

[ Lainey Kekic ]Sophomore outside hitter Lainey Kekic (Canfield/Western Reserve) led the Ohio Wesleyan offense, but Wooster used early runs in the first and second sets to take the lead, and held off the Bishops in the third set to record a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Wooster won the match by scores of 25-14, 25-16, 25-14, ending the Bishops' winning streaks at 3 straight NCAC matches and 4 straight contests overall.

The Fighting Scots raced to a 5-1 lead in the first set, getting a pair of kills by Abbie Casey and a block by KateLynn Riley and Lizzi Beal. Ohio Wesleyan rallied to within 10-6 as sophomore outside hitter Stacey Tighe (Lewis Center/Olentangy) had a pair of kills, but Wooster bounced back with a 7-3 run that included kills by Casey and Riley, and extended the lead to 22-11 on Kate Brady's kill. Sophomore outside hitter Alexa Bean (Columbus/Upper Arlington) brought the Bishops closer with a pair of kills, but Wooster ended the set on Casey's kill.

Wooster took a 4-1 lead in the second set on the strength of kills by Casey and Riley. Ohio Wesleyan was within 6-4 after a tip by sophomore setter Sarah Marshall (Lima/Senior), but the Scots gradually pulled away, increasing the lead to 11-6 after a pair of kills by Sarah Hawke and a kill and a block by Casey, and stretching that lead to 21-12 on back-to-back kills by Casey and Riley, before Riley finished the set with a tip over the Bishop front line.

Ohio Wesleyan took the early lead in the third set, going up, 2-1, on kills by junior outside hitter Kristin Kovach (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) and Kekic, and the Bishops still led, 4-2, before a pair of Riley kills helped Wooster to a 5-4 lead. Ohio Wesleyan was within 12-10 thanks in part to a kill by senior middle hitter Janna Dagley (Beavercreek), but the Fighting Scots went on an 8-2 burst that included points by Megan Earle and Riley to open up a 20-12 lead, and Wooster closed out the match from there.

Kekic led the Bishops with 5 kills, while Bean and Kovach finished with 4 kills each. Marshall collected 18 assists. Kovach led Ohio Wesleyan with 12 digs.
