Ohio Wesleyan 66, Wooster 52

Jan. 3, 2009

[ Pam Quigney ]Sophomore guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) buried a pair of 3-pointers to fuel an 11-0 first-half run, then kicked off a 9-0 second-half run that helped Ohio Wesleyan pull away for a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wooster on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Wooster had closed to within 12-10 on a bucket by Kym Wenz midway through the first half when Quigney knocked down a 3-pointer to start the Ohio Wesleyan run.

Freshman wing Lea Mackenbach (St. Marys/Memorial) followed with a 3-pointer, and Quigney hit another trifecta on the Bishops' next possession before senior post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) scored on a fast break to give Ohio Wesleyan a 23-10 lead.

Kaitlin Krister hit a pair of free throws to end the Bishop run, and when Meredith Wilson hit a 3-pointer during the last minute of the half, the Fighting Scots had come back to within 31-22 at the intermission.

On the opening possession of the second half, sophomore wing Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) stole the ball and fed Quigney for a fast break lay-in, igniting a 9-0 run that also included a 3-point play by sophomore post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville), a Hamilton lay-in and a Cordell jumper that stretched the Bishop lead to 40-22 just under 3 minutes into the period.

Wooster fought back to within 40-29 as Christina Cruce contributed a lay-in and Kym Wenz hit a jumper and a 3-pointer, but that 11-point margin was as close as the Fighting Scots would come.

Quigney led the Bishops with 27 points and 5 assists. Hamilton posted a double-double, collecting 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Cordell added 11 points and Gordon finished with 10 points.

For Wooster, Wenz and Kaitlin Krister each notched double-doubles, Wenz with 23 points and 11 boards and Krister with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
