Denison 70, Ohio Wesleyan 59

[ Kayla Gordon ]Senior post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) scored 5 points as Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with a 9-0 run, but Denison rallied to take the lead and pulled away during the second half to post a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday in Granville.

Hamilton sank a pair of free throws to put the Bishops on the scoreboard, and after baskets by sophomore wing Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) and sophomore post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville), Hamilton added a free throw and a lay-in that increased the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 9-0 with 15:27 left in the first half.

Denison's Sarah Perrine scored on a fast break to end the Big Red drought, and Katie St. Clair followed with a 3-pointer and another fast break lay-in before Shaina Kaiser hit a lay-in to tie the game at 9-9 with 11:35 to play.

The Bishops responded with a Gordon lay-in and a pair of Hamilton free throws for a 13-9 lead with exactly 8 minutes remaining, and Ohio Wesleyan still led, 19-18, after a bucket by sophomore guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) with 5:19 to go.

Denison went ahead to stay with a basket by Jackie Pachuta and a 3-pointer by Kaiser, and the Big Red opened up a 7-point lead on Perrine's fast-break jumper before Cordell wrapped up the first half with a 3-pointer that brought the Bishops within 29-25.

Gordon scored early in the second half to once again bring Ohio Wesleyan within 4 points, but Haley Dahlgard hit a 3-pointer to start a 7-1 Denison run that stretched the Big Red lead to 38-28 with 16:47 left in regulation time.

Ohio Wesleyan rallied to within 52-45 when Gordon knocked down a 3-pointer at the midway point of the second half, but the Big Red scored the next 8 points, getting 3-pointers from Perrine and Caitlin Graessle, to open up a 60-45 advantage.

Hamilton and Gordon shared the Bishop lead with 15 points apiece, with Hamilton tearing down a career-high 18 rebounds. Quigney added 11 points and Cordell led the Bishops with 6 assists.

Kaiser had 18 points to lead Denison, with Perrine adding 16 points, St. Clair scoring 12 points and Graessle adding 10 points.
