Ohio Wesleyan 84, Earlham 60

[ Kayla Gordon ]Sophomore post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) buried a pair of 3-pointers during a game-opening 9-2 run, sophomore wing Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) scored 4 points during an 11-0 first-half run that extended the Ohio Wesleyan lead into double figures, and Cordell and sophomore guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) combined for all 11 points during an 11-0 run that broke the game open as the Bishops defeated Earlham in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Gordon knocked down a 3-pointer to open the day's scoring, and after Tasha Merrill countered with a basket for Earlham, Gordon again connected from long range, and when junior wing Rachel Seibel (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) followed with a 3-pointer, the Bishops held a 9-2 lead less than 3 minutes into the game.

Earlham's Jayana Sims hit 3 lay-ins in a span of 3 minutes as the Quakers battled back to within 13-10 with 13:54 left in the half, but freshman wing Lea Mackenbach (St. Marys/Memorial) answered with a lay-in to jump-start the Bishops' first 11-0 run of the half.

Gordon added a fast-break lay-in, Cordell sank a pair of jumpers and Quigney converted a 3-point play to stretch the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 24-10 midway through the period.

The Quakers fought back again, getting 3-pointers from Kortney Corman and Princess Darnell while scoring the next 7 points to cut the gap to 24-17, and the visitors were still within 36-23 on Merrill's jumper with 5:19 left in the first half.

Quigney drained a 3-pointer and added a fast-break lay-in, and Cordell followed with a 3-pointer and a 3-point play to give Ohio Wesleyan a 46-23 lead with 3:10 to play in the period, and the Bishops would lead by at least 17 points during the remainder of the contest.

Cordell led the Bishops with 24 points and shared the team lead with 4 assists, while Quigney added 13 points. Gordon posted a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, and shared the team lead with 4 assists. Senior post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) led the Bishops with 11 rebounds.

Merrill led the Quakers with 18 points and 7 rebounds.
