![]() Wilmington 70, Ohio Wesleyan 59 Jan. 21, 2009 The Quakers jumped to an early 4-0 lead on a Claire Brown 3-pointer and a free throw by Olivia Walters, but Cordell hit a lay-in and buried a 3-pointer to pull the Bishops within 6-5 just over 5 minutes into the contest. Ohio Wesleyan was still within 14-11 after a score by sophomore post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) when Wilmington took off on its run, scoring 8 points in just under a minute. Allie Meranda and Brown hit 3-pointers for the Quakers, and after Brown's trifecta, Amy Bricker stole the ball and fed Brown for a jumper that made it 22-11 with 7:04 left in the half. Senior post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) hit a pair of free throws to end the Quaker run, but a jumper by Kourtney Kin and another Brown 3-pointer pushed the lead back into double digits, and Wilmington extended the margin to 19 points late in the half behind a 3-pointer and a 3-point play from Kin. The Quakers used a 14-6 run at the beginning of the second half to stretch the lead to 25 points, and still held a 57-32 advantage with 11:32 to go when the Bishops rallied. Cordell went 4-for-4 from the line and sophomore guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) added a lay-in and a pair of free throws before sophomore guard Hannah Coughlin (Dublin/Scioto) scored to cap a 10-0 Bishop run. Kin scored on a fast break to end a 4-minute-plus scoring drought for the Quakers, but the Bishops took off on another run, getting a lay-in and a 3-pointer from Quigney and a lay-in and a pair of free throws from Cordell to close to within 62-51 with 3:29 remaining. Wilmington got 4 straight free throws from Kin to push the lead back to 15 points, and while the Bishops came up with 3-pointers from Gordon and freshman guard Shannon Delaney (Delaware/Olentangy) down the stretch, the Ohio Wesleyan rally would fall short. Cordell led the Bishops with 18 points and 3 assists, while Quigney scored 15 points. Gordon grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Kin led Wilmington with 23 points and Brown finished with 14 points. Olivia Walters led the Quakers with 10 rebounds and Marianne McGoron had a game-high 8 assists. |
