![]() Wittenberg 73, Ohio Wesleyan 72 Jan. 24, 2009 Ohio Wesleyan had led, 38-27, at halftime, and the Bishops still held an 8-point lead when Wittenberg closed the gap with a 3-pointer by Sarah Watson and a 3-point play by Stephanie Boardman, making it a 2-point game at the midway point of the half. After sophomore wing Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) gave Ohio Wesleyan a 68-65 lead with a lay-in with 2:35 remaining, the Tigers countered with lay-ins by Hueter and Boardman to take a 69-68 lead with 2:02 to play. Sophomore guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) sank a pair of free throws to restore the lead to Ohio Wesleyan with 1:29 to go, only to see Wittenberg answer with a Carrie Dyer lay-in at the 1:02 mark. Ohio Wesleyan's next possession saw the Bishops miss 4 shots but control the offensive rebound each time. After the fourth miss, Seibel snared the rebound and hit a jumper for a 72-71 Ohio Wesleyan lead with :09 left in regulation time. Seibel was fouled on the play, but missed the free throw and Wittenberg cleared the rebound, with Hueter scoring the game-winning points on the ensuing possession. Down, 2-0, after the first possession of the game, Ohio Wesleyan reeled off the next 10 points as Quigney and sophomore post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) each scored twice and senior post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) added a bucket. Gordon's 3-pointer with 11:36 left in the half extended the Bishop lead to 20-10, and Ohio Wesleyan pushed its lead to 11 points on 4 different occasions during the period. Quigney led the Bishops with 23 points, while Gordon scored 15 points and Hamilton finished with 13 points and a team-high 8 rebounds. Cordell led the Bishops with 5 assists. Boardman led Wittenberg with 31 points. Dyer and Hueter had 10 points apiece for the Tigers. |
