[ Tyler Cordell ]Sophomore wing Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) scored 9 points during a 19-4 first-half run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and sophomore guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) had 5 points as the Bishops finished off the first half with a 7-0 burst on the way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Thursday in Oberlin.

The Yeowomen raced to an early 6-1 lead behind the scoring of Syrea Thomas, who scored all 6 points.

Cordell's 3-pointer with 16:42 on the clock gave Ohio Wesleyan its first basket of the game, and the Bishops took the lead for good when sophomore post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) buried a 3-pointer with 14:20 left in the half. Cordell followed with a 3-pointer at the 13:05 mark to stretch the advantage to 10-6.

Thomas hit a jumper to bring the Yeowomen within 10-8, but Cordell answered with another 3-pointer before a pair of Gordon free throws gave the Bishops a 15-8 lead with 10:46 to go.

Quigney hit a 3-pointer and freshman guard Elyse Wenger (Loveland) added a jumper to cap the Ohio Wesleyan run, giving the Bishops a 20-10 advantage with 7:47 left in the half.

Oberlin was still within 29-20 on Fran Holoman's lay-in with 2:12 remaining in the period when Gordon stole the ball and fed Quigney for a lay-in, sophomore guard Hannah Coughlin (Dublin/Scioto) stole the ball and scored, and Quigney hit a 3-pointer with :08 on the clock to give Ohio Wesleyan a 36-20 lead at the intermission.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 64-43 lead on a lay-in by senior post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) with 6:50 to play when the the Yeowomen rallied, holding the Bishops scoreless for more than 5 minutes. Meanwhile, Alyssa Clark, Emily Chu Finkel and Holoman hit free throws; Kayla Brandt scored on a fast break and Holoman and Chu Finkel followed with lay-ins to bring Oberlin within 64-52 with 2:22 to go.

Hamilton ended the Oberlin run with a lay-in with 1:27 remaining, and the Bishops went 8-for-8 from the line during the remainder of the game to seal the outcome.

Gordon scored a team-high 21 points and shared the Bishop lead with 5 rebounds. Quigney finished with 19 points and Cordell added 16 points, shared the team lead with 5 boards, and dished out a game-best 4 assists.

Clark led the Yeowomen with 25 points.
