Ohio Wesleyan 64, Hiram 55

Feb. 21, 2009

[ Pam Quigney ]Sophomore guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) sank a pair of 3-pointers and junior wing Rachel Seibel (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) added another during a 15-3 run that opened up a double-digit lead, and the Bishops kept Hiram at bay to finish off a win in the teams' North Coast Athletic Conference regular-season finale on Saturday in Hiram.

The win, combined with Allegheny's loss to Denison, moves the Bishops into a third-place tie with Allegheny in the final conference standings, but Allegheny wins the tiebreaker between the teams. Ohio Wesleyan will be the No. 4 seed in the upcoming NCAC tournament and will host Wittenberg a tournament quarterfinal game at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Terriers opened the day's scoring with Ashley Drum's jumper from the lane, but Quigney hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Bishops a 6-2 lead. Freshman post Dany Finck (Hilliard/Darby) sank lay-ins on consecutive possessions before a jumper from sophomore wing Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) and a Seibel 3-pointer finished off the Bishop run, leaving Ohio Wesleyan with a 15-5 lead with 13:33 left in the first half.

A 3-point play by senior post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby), a 3-pointer from sophomore post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville), and a jumper by freshman wing Lea Mackenbach (St. Marys/Memorial) extended the Bishop lead to 25-8 with 9:46 to play.

Hiram rallied with a 3-pointer from Pamela Spencer and a pair of lay-ins by Drum to close to within 29-20 with 4:06 left in the period, but the Terriers would not score again during the first half, with the Bishops collecting a lay-in and a tip-in by Gordon and 3 free throws from Hamilton to take a 36-20 lead at the intermission.

Ohio Wesleyan stretched the margin to 20 points a few times during the second half, the last time on Finck's free throw with 12:42 remaining, and while Tiffany Shields and Spencer hit 3-pointers to help Hiram close the gap to 56-47 with 5:48 to play, the Terriers would not come closer than that 9-point margin.

Hamilton led the Bishops with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Quigney and Cordell scored 12 points apiece for Ohio Wesleyan.

Spencer finished with 18 points for Hiram, all coming from beyond the 3-point arc.
