![]() St. Mary's 70, Ohio Wesleyan 60 Nov. 21, 2008 Ohio Wesleyan will face Anderson, a 70-64 loser to Robert Morris-Springfield in Friday's nightcap, in the tournament consolation game on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Bishops spotted the Belles an early 3-0 lead on a 3-pointer by Maggie Ronan before storming back to score the next 6 points, getting lay-ins by sophomore post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville), sophomore wing Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) and sophomore guard Pam Quigney (Mentor), and 3-pointers by Cordell and Quigney soon stretched the Bishop lead to 12-5. Ronan answered with a basket and a 3-pointer to kick off a 10-2 St. Mary's run that gave the Belles a 15-14 lead with 12:07 left in the first half, and neither team would lead by more than 4 points during the remainder of the period. Down, 34-33, at the break, St. Mary's opened the second half with a 7-0 run that included 4 free throws by Erin Newsom and a basket from Liz Wade. Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 44-42 on Gordon's lay-in with 13:32 left in the game, but St. Mary's responded with a pair of lay-ins from Nicole Beier and 3 free throws from Patsy Mahoney during a 9-0 spree that gave the Belles a 53-42 lead with 11:03 to go. Gordon ended the Bishop drought with a free throw, and Quigney's bucket with 9:57 left brought the Bishops within 53-45. Ohio Wesleyan still trailed, 58-49, with 6:43 remaining in regulation time before Cordell erupted for a 3-pointer and a lay-in, then Hamilton converted a 3-point play to bring the Bishops within 58-57 with 4:54 to go, but Anna Kammrath's lay-in and a pair of free throws from Newsom restored the St. Mary's lead to 62-57. Quigney buried a 3-pointer to close the gap to 62-60 with 2:35 left, but the Bishops would not score again. St. Mary's finished the game with a lay-in and a free throw by Kammrath, lay-ins by Katie Rashid and Liz Wade, and a free throw by Mahoney. Quigney led the Bishops with 20 points, while Gordon finished with 11 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds, and Cordell scored 10 points and led Ohio Wesleyan with 5 assists. Ronan led St. Mary's with 15 points, Beier added 13 points and Newsom scored 11 points. |
