Franklin 83, Ohio Wesleyan 79

Sophomore guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) buried a pair of 3-pointers during an 8-0 run that gave the Bishops an 8-point first-half lead, but Franklin took the lead with a 10-2 second-half run and held off an Ohio Wesleyan rally to defeat the Bishops in non-conference action on Tuesday in Franklin, Ind.

Ohio Wesleyan jumped to a quick 3-0 lead on a 3-pointer by senior post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) only to see Franklin respond with a 12-4 run consisting of 4 points apiece by Heather Harper, Traci Lippold and Monica Planalp, with a Planalp lay-in giving the Grizzlies a 12-7 lead less than 5 minutes into the action.

The Bishops stormed back with a 15-2 run, with Quigney providing the first 12 points on a pair of 3-pointers, a pair of basket and a pair of free throws. Hamilton finished off the Bishop spree with another 3-pointer that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 22-14 lead with 11:48 left in the first half.

Franklin scored the next 8 points to tie the game, and after the teams traded baskets for a 24-24 tie, it was Ohio Wesleyan with an 8-0 run courtesy of a pair of Quigney 3-pointers and a Hamilton lay-in, to restore the 8-point lead at 32-24 with 5:43 to play in the half.

Ohio Wesleyan finished the first half with a 3-pointer by sophomore wing Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) to take a 51-44 lead into the locker room, and the Bishops still led, 55-50, on a jumper by sophomore post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) just under 3 minutes into the second half.

The Grizzlies closed the gap with lay-ins by Planalp and Harper, and after a pair of Quigney free throws, Franklin tied the game with a free throw by Lippold and a jumper by Jessica Schwartz. Franklin took a 60-59 lead on Lippold's lay-in with 12:38 left, and after a Lippold fast break lay-in and a lay-in by Brittney Wilson, the Grizzlies held a 64-59 advantage with 10:56 to go.

Hamilton hit a pair of lay-ins to bring the Bishops within 64-63, but Franklin scored the next 6 points, stretching the lead to 70-63 on Brittney Wilson's 3-pointer with 5:39 left.

Ohio Wesleyan came within 2 points when Quigney was fouled on a 3-point shot and sank all 3 free throws to make it 74-72 with 2:51 left, and did so again on Cordell's lay-in that made it a 76-74 game with 2:29 to go, but the Grizzlies again had an answer, getting a pair of free throws from Lippold and a lay-in by Harper to take an 80-74 lead with 1:23 remaining.

The Bishops fought back to within 2 points again on a Quigney free throw and a Gordon 3-pointer, cutting the deficit to 80-78 with :34 left, and Ohio Wesleyan had the ball with a chance to tie the game after Planalp hit one of 2 from the line for an 81-78 Franklin lead with :29 remaining.

Hamilton was fouled and hit the second of 2 free throws to bring the Bishops within 81-79 with :16 left, but Planalp hit a pair of free throws with :04 to play to seal the win.

Quigney led the Bishops with a career-high 31 points and dished out a team-leading 4 assists. Hamilton finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds, equaling her career bests in both categories, while Cordell ended up with 13 points and Gordon scored 12 points.

Harper and Lippold shared the Franklin lead with 18 points apiece, and Planalp added 12 points.
