Wittenberg 14, Ohio Wesleyan 13

[ Jessica Copeland ]Junior midfielder Jessica Copeland (Ligonier, Pa./Foxcroft (Va.)) scored to give Ohio Wesleyan a 12-11 lead, but Wittenberg came back to send the game into overtime, took a 14-12 lead in the first extra session, and held on for a North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Bishops on Wednesday in Springfield.

The Tigers led, 10-7, midway through the second half before Ohio Wesleyan stormed back to the the game. Copeland's unassisted goal with 15:24 left brought the Bishops within 10-8, then freshman attacker Lena Knofler (Portland, Ore./St. Mary's Academy) scored just over a minute later to make it a 10-9 game.

Ohio Wesleyan pulled even on Copeland's goal with 13:35 left in regulation time.

Wittenberg answered just over a minute later with a score by Lizzie Amorello, but senior midfielder Hannah Mudge (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) countered for Ohio Wesleyan, converting a free-position shot to tie the game at 11-11 with 11:10 to go.

Copeland broke the tie with an unassisted goal with 8:38 left, and that lead held until Wittenberg's Jordan Beauchamp scored with :09 to play, sending the game into overtime.

The Tigers took the lead in the first extra period when Beauchamp fed Megan Meige for a score, then added a goal by Lindsey Hanners with :28 left in the period for a 14-12 lead.

Copeland tallied a free-position goal with :59 left in the second overtime, but the Bishops could not come up with the tying goal.

The teams traded goals through the first half, which ended with Wittenberg taking a 6-5 lead into the locker room after Amorello scored with :01 remaining in the period.

Senior attacker Tara Porter (North Quincy, Mass./Berkshire School) scored early in the second half, tying the game at 6-6, but the Tigers erupted for 3 goals in a span of 45 seconds to move to a 9-6 lead, setting up the closing minutes of regulation.

Copeland led the Bishops with 5 goals. Knofler finished with 3 goals and sophomore midfielder Marlowe Mavian (Columbus/Wellington) scored twice.

Freshman Lauren Figy (Westfield, Mass.) made 7 saves during the first half for Ohio Wesleyan, and freshman Liz Searfos (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) had 5 saves during the second half.

Amorello led the Tigers with 4 goals and 2 assists, while Beauchamp finished with 2 goals and 4 assists.

Jenny Schaafsma recorded 13 saves for Wittenberg.
