Ohio Wesleyan 2, Mount St. Joseph 1

Oct. 21, 2008

[ Erica Lowell ] Sophomore midfielder Erica Lowell (Bay Village/Bay) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal early in the second half as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Mount St. Joseph in non-conference play on Tuesday at Roy Rike Field.

The Bishops had taken a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when senior forward Allie Cozzone (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) sent a pass ahead to freshman midfielder Makinzie Krebsbach (Vadnais Heights, Minn./Totino-Grace), who ran the ball into the box and fired a shot past Lion keeper Kelly Bare.

Mount St. Joseph had a chance to tie the game later in the first half when forward Beth Schuermann tried to loft a shot over Bishop keeper Laura VanHoey (Rochester, Mich.), but VanHoey made the save near the right post.

Ohio Wesleyan increased its lead to 2-0 early in the second half as senior forward Michelle Corbett (Dublin/Scioto) had the ball inside the Mount St. Joseph penalty area, but the Lion defense broke up the play before Corbett could get off a shot. The loose ball rolled toward the left side of the box to Lowell, who blasted a shot into the back of the Mount St. Joseph net for her first collegiate goal.

Bare kept the Lions in the game, batting aside a shot by senior forward Megan Quinn (Hilliard/Columbus School for Girls) after Quinn made a nifty move to get open and get off a shot in the 54th minute, and grabbing a shot by freshman midfielder Belle Madison (Charlevoix, Mich.) in the 73rd minute.

Lowell's goal proved crucial when Schuermann made a run into the box from the left side and sent a shot into the right side of the Ohio Wesleyan goal, bringing the Lions within 2-1 with 3:16 left in regulation time.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Mount St. Joseph, 15-10. VanHoey finished with 3 saves for Ohio Wesleyan, while Bare had 7 saves for the Lions.
