![]() 1st of 9 at NCAC Relays Jan. 31, 2009 Sophomore Rachael Newman (Strongsville) helped Ohio Wesleyan to a pair of first-place finishes as the Bishops successfully defended their North Coast Athletic Conference Relays championship with a win in the annual meet on Saturday in Granville. Ohio Wesleyan won the meet with 102 points to 70 for runner-up Wittenberg. Wooster finished in third place with 60 1/2 points, followed by Allegheny (54), Oberlin (46 1/2), Denison (46), Earlham (40), Kenyon (22), and Hiram (3). The meet consists of relays, running events and field events, with the running events and field events scored by ranking the combined efforts of each school's top 2 participants. The NCAC Relays title was the third in a row for the Bishops, who also won in 2004 before finishing second in 2005 and 2006. Newman combined with sophomore Lainey Kekic (Canfield/Western Reserve), sophomore Rowena Jones (Shutesbury, Mass./Amherst Regional), and junior Sarah Shinn (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) to win the 1600-meter relay in 4:10.30, and that foursome also finished second in the 800-meter relay. Newman also teamed with junior Ashlie Britton (LeRoy/Painesville Riverside), sophomore Christa Cocumelli (Dublin/Bishop Watterson), and junior Kara Reiter (Chardon) to win the sprint medley relay in 4:26.41. Britton and Cocumelli teamed to win the 55-meter hurdles relay with a total of :18.35. Freshman Chelsea Imm (Glandorf/Ottawa-Glandorf) and sophomore Laura Packard (Mount Vernon) paired up for a win in the pole vault relay with a total of 17-11 3/4. Freshman Hannah Phlipot (Van Wert) and freshman Sam Smyth (Falmouth, Maine) claimed Ohio Wesleyan's other first-place finish, winning the shot put relay with a total of 73-11 3/4. Other standouts for the Bishops included freshman Emma Lisull (Ann Arbor, Mich./Greenhills) and sophomore Jesi Dackin (Reynoldsburg), who finished second in the 5000-meter run relay. Kekic paired with junior Claire Everhart (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) to place second in the high jump relay, teamed with Shinn to finish third in the long jump relay, and joined Britton in placing third in the triple jump relay. The Bishop 3200-meter relay team of freshman Maggie O'Connell (Hingham, Mass.), Lisull, junior Amber Alegria (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic), and sophomore Kat Zimmerly (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) finished second, as did the distance medley relay team of Zimmerly, Reiter, O'Connell and Everhart. |
