at Rose-Hulman Early Bird

[ Lainey Kekic ]Sophomore Lainey Kekic (Canfield/Western Reserve) and senior Jessica Merrill (Columbia Station/Columbia) won 2 events apiece and junior Sharon Rymut (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) set a school record to lead Ohio Wesleyan at the Rose-Hulman Early Bird Invitational, hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind.

The meet, which included competitors from Evansville, Hanover, Ohio Wesleyan, Rose-Hulman, Webster, and Wisconsin, was not scored.

Kekic won the long jump with a leap of 15-6 3/4 and won the 200-meter dash in a time of :26.98. She also finished second in the 100-meter dash and the triple jump.

Merrill won the high jump by clearing 5- 1/4 and took the triple jump with an effort of 31-10 1/4, edging Kekic by a quarter of an inch. Merrill also finished third in the 100-meter hurdles and fourth in the 200-meter dash.

Rymut won the hammer with a throw of 143-4, breaking her own school record of 142-1 set last year. She also finished second in the discus and tied for fourth in the shot put.

Also winning events for Ohio Wesleyan were junior Sarah Shinn (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane), who won the 1500-meter run in 4:53.26 and combined with sophomore Rowena Jones (Shutesbury, Mass./Amherst Regional), junior Kara Reiter (Chardon), and junior Claire Everhart (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) to win the 1600-meter relay in 4:14.47; sophomore Christa Cocumelli (Dublin/Bishop Watterson), who won the 100-meter hurdles in :16.19 and finished third in the 400-meter hurdles; sophomore Rachael Newman (Strongsville), who won the 400-meter dash in 1:02.49 and placed third in the 200-meter dash; freshman Chelsea Imm (Glandorf/Ottawa-Glandorf), who won the pole vault by clearing 9-11 3/4; and freshman Hannah Phlipot (Van Wert), who won the shot put with a throw of 37-8.

Other standouts for the Bishops included junior Ashlie Britton (LeRoy/Painesville Riverside), who finished second in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter dash; freshman Sam Smyth (Falmouth, Maine), who was second in the shot put, fourth in the discus, and fifth in the hammer; sophomore Kat Zimmerly (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane), who finished second in the 1500-meter run; senior Valerie Sloboda (Columbia, Md./Atholton), who was second in the 800-meter run; sophomore Chardae Spencer (Willowick/Eastlake North), who placed third in the high jump and the 100-meter dash; senior Megan Downing (Mentor/Gilmour Academy), who was third in the 400-meter dash and fifth in the 200-meter dash; sophomore Audra Pohlman (Delaware/Hayes), who finished third in the shot put; Reiter, who was third in the 1500-meter run; Everhart, who placed third in the 800-meter run; sophomore Caiti Goodman (Washington, D.C./Bethesda-Chevy Chase (Md.)), who finished fourth in the 100-meter dash; freshman Marissa Ballard (Columbus/Centerburg), who placed fourth in the 400-meter dash; Jones, who was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles; freshman Emma Lisull (Ann Arbor, Mich./Greenhills), who finished fifth in the 1500-meter run; freshman Deanna Breaux (Bossier City, La./Parkway), who finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles; and freshman Maggie O'Connell (Hingham, Mass), who was fifth in the 800-meter run.
