Case Reserve 55, Ohio Wesleyan 7

[ Paul Schumann ]Case Reserve's Corey Checkan scored on runs of 2, 1, and 1 yard as the 12th-ranked Spartans took a 21-0 lead and went on to defeat Ohio Wesleyan in non-conference action on Saturday in Cleveland.

CWRU took the opening kickoff and moved downfield on Dan Whalen completions of 25 yards to Tim Cowdrick and 33 yards to Zach Homyk, with the latter setting up Checkan's 2-yard scoring burst and a 7-0 Case Reserve lead.

Ohio Wesleyan drove into Case Reserve territory on each of its first 2 possessions, but the first stalled after a first down at the Spartan 35, and the second ended at the CWRU 40.

Whalen directed another Spartan scoring drive late in the first quarter, highlighted by completions of 17 yards to D.J. Suitca and 12 yards to Cowdrick, and Checkan finished off the march with a 1-yard run for a 14-0 margin late in the first quarter.

Checkan's 1-yard TD run extended the Spartan lead to 21-0 midway through the second quarter, and the hosts added a 29-yard scoring pass from Whalen to Homyk and a 12-yard TD run by Greg Meyer on the way to a 35-0 halftime lead. The Spartans would add second-half scores by Joey Baum, Billy Deitmen, and Vincen Hokavar.

Freshman quarterback Geoff Gompf (Mount Gilead) moved the Bishops downfield, hitting junior tight end Danny Flanegan (Mansfield/Ontario) for 39 yards, then picking up 8 yards on his own before connecting with freshman split end Nick Ziegenbusch (Sugarcreek/Garaway) on a 27-yard touchdown pass.

Freshman running back Stephen Haynes (Crestview, Fla./Niceville) led the Bishops with 21 yards on 9 rushes and shared the team lead with 4 catches for 13 yards. Gompf completed 11 of 20 passes for 152 yards and a score, with 4 of those passes going to Flanegan for 66 yards.

Meyer led Case Reserve with 44 yards on 8 carries. Whalen completed 21 of 34 passes for 265 yards and a touchdown, and Cowdrick and Homyk had 6 receptions apiece, with Cowdrick accounting for 92 yards and Homyk 83 yards.

Junior linebacker Chad Murawski (Chesterland/West Geauga), freshman defensive back Paul Schumann (West Lafayette, Ind.), and senior linebacker Sam Bixler (Denver, Colo./South) shared the Bishop lead with 8 tackles apiece. Senior safety Daniel DeLay (Pine, Colo./Conifer) and senior safety Rylan Mitter-Burke (Marlborough, Mass./Marlboro) added 7 tackles apiece, and senior defensive end Mike Browning (East Islip, N.Y.) had 6 tackles, including 1 for loss.

Jeff Brown led the Spartans with 8 tackles, including 2 1/2 for loss. Michael Harris and Lee Sasala added 5 stops apiece.
