![]() Wittenberg 3, Ohio Wesleyan 0 Sept. 24, 2009 The Tigers struck quickly, earning a penalty corner in the third minute. Boo Vernon's pass into the circle was broken up by an Ohio Wesleyan defender, but the ball went to Meredith Price, whose shot found the back of the Bishop cage 2:42 into the action. Vernon and Price also figured in Wittenberg's second goal, with Price fielding the injection from the corner and passing the ball to Vernon for the goal with 13:58 left in the first half. The Tigers had the edge in play throughout the first half, outshooting Ohio Wesleyan, 8-2, and piling up a 9-0 advantage in corners. Wittenberg added to its lead in the first minute of the second half, again off a penalty corner. Kelley Herde took the shot for Wittenberg, but senior goalkeeper Krista Murray (Rochester Hills, Mich./University Liggett) was there for the save. The rebound went to Elizabeth Dwyer, who stuffed the ball inside the left post to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead. Ohio Wesleyan generated more offensive threats during the second half, outshooting the Tigers, 7-4, and amassing 9 corners to 4 for Wittenberg, but the Bishops could not translate those chances into goals. Sophomore attacker Abby Walsh (Millville, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) and junior attacker Christa Cocumelli (Dublin/Bishop Watterson) both got shots off Bishop corners, but both were stopped by Wittenberg goalkeeper Jenny Schaafsma. Another Cocumelli shot whistled wide of the left post by less than the width of the ball. Freshman midfielder Calina Hilyard (Columbus/Upper Arlington) got a good look in the 70th minute, but Wittenberg's Marisa Myers cleared the ball to preserve the shutout. Wittenberg outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 12-9. Murray finished with 5 saves for Ohio Wesleyan, while Schaafsma had 3 saves in the Tiger cage. |
