Kenyon 3, Ohio Wesleyan 2

Oct. 7, 2009

[ Christa Cocumelli ]Junior attacker Christa Cocumelli (Dublin/Bishop Watterson) scored a pair of goals that wiped out 1-goal deficits, but Kenyon got the game-winner with 15:27 left in regulation time and held off a last-minute Ohio Wesleyan threat to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday at Selby Field.

Cocumelli nearly gave the Bishops a 1-0 lead in the third minute, striking a high shot that appeared headed inside the left post, but Kenyon defender Claire Chapman blocked the ball to keep the game scoreless.

The Ladies took a 1-0 lead when Maggie Gilligan broke in on the Bishop goal, drawing senior goalkeeper Krista Murray (Rochester Hills, Mich./University Liggett) out of the cage and then dishing to Meredith Yellen, who finished the chance in the sixth minute.

Cocumelli evened the score shortly thereafter, tipping a drive from sophomore attacker Abby Walsh (Millville, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) into the back of the Kenyon cage in the 13th minute of play.

Gilligan gave Kenyon a 2-1 lead early in the second half, tipping in a drive from Sarah McNee, but the Bishops evened the score just over 3 minutes later.

Sophomore attacker Mimi Anthony (Millbrook, N.Y./Millbrook School) centered the ball to Cocumelli from the right side, but the Kenyon defense prevented a shot. Cocumelli stayed with the ball, spun, and swept the ball inside the left post to make it a 2-2 game.

Kenyon took the lead in the 55th minute when Gilligan scored from a crowd in front of the Ohio Wesleyan cage.

The Bishops challenged in the last minute of play, with Anthony getting off a shot from the right side only to see Kenyon keeper Elizabeth Flynn make the save. The ball continued to freshman midfielder Abbie Martin (Afton, N.Y./Central), but Martin's shot didn't reach the goal line in the closing seconds.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Kenyon, 10-7. Murray finished with 1 save for Ohio Wesleyan, while Flynn made 2 saves for the Ladies.
