Ohio Wesleyan 3, Denison 2

Oct. 10, 2009

[ Lilly Jianas ]Junior attacker Lilly Jianas (Shawnee Mission, Kan./Pembroke Hill) scored the game-winning goal with 4:10 left in regulation time to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Denison in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Selby Field.

Ohio Wesleyan had earned a penalty corner, and sophomore attacker Macie Miller (Kettering/Fairmont) sent the ball to Jianas, whose shot found the back of the Big Red cage to give the Bishops the lead for good.

Denison threatened in the closing minutes, getting a penalty corner after the Bishop defense blocked a shot by Brooke Donovan, but Catie Merrick's shot off that corner was deflected wide of the cage.

Jianas helped the Bishops take an early 1-0 with a centering pass to junior attacker Christa Cocumelli (Dublin/Bishop Watterson), who swept the ball inside the left post in the eighth minute of play.

The Big Red countered with a pair of goals in rapid-fire fashion, evening the game when Donovan scored off a penalty corner in the 15th minute, then taking the lead in the 16th minute when Kristen Schneider's shot was stopped by senior goalkeeper Krista Murray (Rochester Hills, Mich./University Liggett), with Catie Merrick there to pounce on the rebound and deposit it into the back of the Bishop cage.

Just over 2 minutes later, the Bishops responded to tie the game at 2-2 as sophomore attacker Mimi Anthony (Millbrook, N.Y./Millbrook School) centered the ball from the right side to sophomore attacker Lex Kondas (Powell/Olentangy Liberty), who finished the chance in front for her first goal of the season.

Denison outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 15-7. Murray finished with 6 saves for the Bishops, while Brittany Benson made 1 save for the Big Red.
