Wittenberg 4, Ohio Wesleyan 2

[ Caiti Goodman ]Junior attacker Caiti Goodman (Washington, D.C./Bethesda-Chevy Chase (Md.)) scored to tie the game at 1-1, but Wittenberg scored goals at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half and went on to defeat Ohio Wesleyan in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Tuesday in Springfield.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when Hannah Schekelhoff tipped a loose ball to Boo Vernon, who deposited it into the back of the Ohio Wesleyan cage.

Ohio Wesleyan evened the game at 1-1 in the 31st minute when junior attacker Lilly Jianas (Shawnee Mission, Kan./Pembroke Hill) sent the ball in from the top of the circle and Goodman tipped it past Wittenberg goalkeeper Jenny Schaafsma.

Wittenberg took the lead when Kellen Morrissey sent a lead pass across to Vernon, whose shot to the left side of the cage just beat the horn to end the first half, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead at the break.

The Tigers struck quickly to increase their lead to 3-1 when Elizabeth Dwyer dribbled in from the center to the left side and scored 33 seconds into the second half.

Junior attacker Christa Cocumelli (Dublin/Bishop Watterson) scored off a pass from sophomore attacker Abby Walsh (Millville, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) to bring the Bishops within 3-2 midway through the second half.

Dwyer answered for the Tigers, scoring off a Vernon feed after a Wittenberg penalty corner in the 63rd minute to restore the 2-goal lead.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the closing minutes, peppering the Wittenberg cage with 4 shots in a span of just over 2 minutes, but the Bishops were not able to pull any closer.

Wittenberg outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 17-13. Senior Krista Murray (Rochester Hills, Mich./University Liggett) finished with 8 saves for the Bishops, while Schaafsma made 5 saves in the Tiger cage.
