Ohio Wesleyan 5, Earlham 0

Oct. 27, 2009

[ Abby Walsh ]Sophomore attacker Abby Walsh (Millville, Mass./Blackstone-Millville), junior attacker Lilly Jianas (Shawnee Mission, Kan./Pembroke Hill), and sophomore attacker Mimi Anthony (Millbrook, N.Y./Millbrook School) scored first-half goals to give Ohio Wesleyan a 3-0 lead, and the Bishops went on to defeat Earlham in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Tuesday at Selby Field.

Ohio Wesleyan completes its NCAC schedule with a record of 7-5. The Bishops can finish in no worse than a tie for third place in the conference standings, but the final standings -- and the seeding for next week's conference tournament -- will not be determined until after Saturday's contests.

The Bishops struck quickly against Earlham, earning a penalty corner just over a minute into the game. After the corner, junior attacker Christa Cocumelli (Dublin/Bishop Watterson) drove toward the Quaker cage, then dished a diagonal pass to Walsh, who tipped it home for a 1-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead.

Ohio Wesleyan had a chance to take a 2-0 lead in the fifth minute when the Bishops were awarded a penalty stroke, but Cocumelli's try was stopped by Earlham keeper Emma Treece.

Jianas added to the Bishop lead midway through the first half. Jianas fired a shot that Treece saved, but Jianas jumped on the rebound and knocked it into the cage to make it a 2-0 game.

Late in the first half, Anthony tipped in a crossing pass from sophomore attacker Macie Miller (Kettering/Fairmont) for a 3-0 Bishop lead.

Cocumelli sealed the verdict with a pair of goals 28 seconds apart early in the second half. The first saw Anthony send the ball across to Cocumelli, who redirected it home just 2:13 into the period. Shortly thereafter, Jianas had a shot stopped by Treece, but Cocumelli was there to pounce on the rebound and finish the play for a 5-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Earlham, 33-10. Senior Krista Murray (Rochester Hills, Mich./University Liggett) had 4 saves for the Bishops, while Treece finished with 14 saves in the Quaker cage.
