![]() Ohio Wesleyan 1, Earlham 0 Nov. 4, 2009 The win is the Battling Bishops' first in NCAC tournament competition and sends Ohio Wesleyan on to Wooster the tournament championship game, where the Bishops will face top-seeded Wooster at 5 p.m. on Saturday at John P. Papp Stadium. After 70 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Bishops settled things quickly in the extra session when sophomore attacker Abby Walsh (Millville, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) sent a lead pass that freed Miller on a breakaway. Charging in one-on-one against Wittenberg keeper Jenny Schaafsma, Miller's shot to the right side found the back of the cage 32 seconds into the overtime period. Ohio Wesleyan had the first scoring chance of the game, but sophomore attacker Mimi Anthony (Millbrook, N.Y./Millbrook School) had her shot cleared away by Tiger defender Kelley Herde in the second minute of play. Senior Krista Murray (Rochester Hills, Mich./University Liggett) denied Wittenberg's Boo Vernon midway through the first half, and Schaafsma stopped a shot by junior attacker Christa Cocumelli (Dublin/Bishop Watterson) in the closing minutes of the period. Ohio Wesleyan threatened the Wittenberg cage more often during the second half, with Miller and Anthony having shots stopped by Schaafsma and Herde respectively. The Bishops nearly ended the game in regulation time in a frenzied final minute of play. Cocumelli fired a shot with 31 seconds to go that Schaafsma saved, giving Ohio Wesleyan a penalty corner. Junior midfielder Jessica Wright (Lancaster) got a look at the cage off the ensuing corner, but her shot went wide right in the final seconds. Ohio Wesleyan outshot Wittenberg, 11-6. Murray finished with 2 saves for the Bishops, while Schaafsma was credited with 4 saves in the Tiger cage. |
