6th of 7 at Gordin-Myers Collegiate Classic

[ Jesse Chiero ]Senior Jesse Chiero (Westerville/South) led Ohio Wesleyan at the Gordin-Myers Collegiate Classic, hosted by Duke University on Monday and Tuesday at The Duke Golf Club in Durham, N.C.

Methodist won the tournament with a 54-hole total of 880, with Huntingdon finishing in second place at 911 and Skidmore in third place at 912. Oglethorpe finished fourth at 918, followed by LaVerne (936), Ohio Wesleyan (953), and Emory (956).

Kent Copeland of North Carolina State, competing as an individual, won medalist honors with a one-under-par total of 215. Brinson Paolini of Duke finished in second place at 217, and Josh Schrader of Methodist and Will Golden of Charlotte tied for third, each with a 2-over-par 218.

Chiero tied for 25th place among individuals, shooting an even-par 72 in Tuesday's third round to finish with a 231.

Senior Michael Sarap (Cambridge) tied for 46th place at 238, senior Peter Joyce (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) finished 50th with a 241, senior Tommy Harman (Perrysburg) tied for 60th place with a 247, and sophomore Nate Fridley (Sidney/Lehman Catholic) finished 62nd with a 249.

The Gordin-Myers Collegiate Classic is named in honor of former Ohio Wesleyan golf coach Dick Gordin and the late Rod Myers, longtime golf coach at Duke University. The tournament annually matches many of the top finishers from the previous spring's NCAA Division III championship tournament. This year, the format has included the addition of Division I players to the field, all competing as individuals.
