Carnegie Mellon 2, Rutgers-Camden 0

Sept. 5, 2009

[ Jordan Halloran ]Senior midfielder Jordan Halloran (Springfield/Catholic Central) converted a penalty kick with 4:57 left in regulation time to lift 15th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan over Calvin in the championship game of the Fred Myers Invitational on Saturday at Roy Rike Field.

In Saturday's consolation game, Carnegie Mellon tallied a goal in each half to defeat Rutgers-Camden.

The Bishops manufactured a few scoring chances during the first half of the championship game. Sophomore forward Matt Bonfini (Dublin/Coffman) maneuvered his way into a couple of good looks at the Calvin goal, and the Bishops' best chance came after a corner kick, when senior back Matt Giannetti (Montclair, N.J.) saw his header cleared off the line by a Knight defender.

Ohio Wesleyan applied more offensive pressure during the second half and got another chance by Bonfini in the 57th minute, then got a shot from junior forward Tyler Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) from a crowd that whistled outside the right post.

Calvin's best opportunities came courtesy of the long-range accuracy of Michael Holwerda, who sent a pair of free kicks into the Ohio Wesleyan goal mouth only to see freshman Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) come up with both tries.

Wall set up the Bishop scoring opportunity when he dribbled into the penalty area and was fouled with 4:57 remaining in regulation time. Halloran stepped up and converted the ensuing penalty kick, and the Bishops were able to protect the lead during the closing minutes of play.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Calvin, 17-9. Senior Richard Ott (Norwalk) had 1 save during the first half and Hendricks made 2 saves during the second half. Jared Rushlau was credited with 3 saves for Calvin.

In Saturday's opener, Carnegie Mellon took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when Jon Simon sent the ball ahead to Ryan Browne, who crossed it from the right side to the left side, where Brett Roller was waiting to finish the play.

The Tartans added some insurance in the 52nd minute when Ricky Griffin converted a penalty kick.

Carnegie Mellon outshot Rutgers-Camden, 22-18. Maks Khurgin stopped 4 shots in posting the shutout for the Tartans, while Tim VanLiew had 5 saves for the Scarlet Raptors.

Ohio Wesleyan junior back Eric Laipple (Westerville/South) received the Dick Gauthier Award as the Fred Myers Invitational's Most Valuable Player.

He was joined on the all-tournament team by Halloran, Wall, sophomore midfielder Travis Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington), and junior midfielder Ryan Harmanis (Hilliard/Davidson).

The Fred Myers Invitational, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Delaware County, has been one of the featured events on the Battling Bishops' schedule for 32 seasons. It honors Fred Myers, longtime soccer and lacrosse coach at Ohio Wesleyan. This year's tournament championship is the 25th for Ohio Wesleyan in the 32 years that the Myers Invitational has been held.
