Sophomore forward Matt Bonfini (Dublin/Coffman) scored the game's only goal, and the Bishop defense preserved the lead through a tense final act as sixth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan defeated John Carroll in non-conference action on Tuesday at Roy Rike Field.
Bonfini won the ball near the top of the penalty area, spun, and whistled a shot into the right side of the Blue Streak goal with 10:26 left in regulation time.
Scoring chances were few and far between during the first half. John Carroll had the only shot on goal during the period, that coming in the 16th minute when Joe Ciacchi's shot off a restart was snared by Bishop keeper Richard Ott (Norwalk) near the right post.
Ohio Wesleyan generated more opportunities during the second half, earning a corner in the 50th minute and getting a shot by senior back Matt Giannetti (Montclair, N.J.) from the top of the box only to see Blue Streak keeper Matt DeMarchi preserve the scoreless tie with a save.
Bonfini drove the ball into the John Carroll penalty area midway through the period, but DeMarchi was again there for the save.
John Carroll rallied in the closing minutes, but freshman goalkeeper Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) made a pair of saves in protecting the lead.
John Carroll's Dave Hickey ripped a shot from the right side that hit the crossbar with 5:35 left in regulation time, but the Blue Streaks weren't done. Less than a minute later, the ball was loose inside the Ohio Wesleyan penalty area when John Carroll's Corey Rider got off a shot, but Hendricks was there for the save. Thor Erikson got off a shot from the right side in the 89th minute, but once again, it was Hendricks making a save.
The visitors had one more chance when Ohio Wesleyan was called for a foul with :05 to play, giving the Blue Streaks a restart from about 35 yards out, but Jake Milli's drive into the box was deflected over the end line.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot John Carroll, 15-7. Ott had 1 save during the first half and Hendricks finished with 3 saves in completing the shutout in the Ohio Wesleyan goal. DeMarchi made 2 saves for the Blue Streaks.
