Alma 1, Oberlin 1

Sept. 11, 2009

[ Tyler Wall ]Junior forward Tyler Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) had a hand in all 3 goals as sixth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan blanked Rose-Hulman in the first round of the annual adidas® Invitational on Friday at Roy Rike Field.

In Friday's opener, Alma and Oberlin played to a 1-1 tie.

Saturday's second round will open with Oberlin against Rose-Hulman at 5 p.m., to be followed by Alma against Ohio Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m.

The Bishops raced to an early 2-0 lead in their first-ever meeting against the Engineers.

Wall put Ohio Wesleyan on the scoreboard when he made a run into the top of the box and ripped a shot past Rose-Hulman keeper Andy Cheung.

Less than 30 seconds later, Wall won the ball and sent it ahead into the Rose-Hulman end. Cheung came out to play the ball, but senior forward Sam Striler (St. Louis, Mo./Country Day) got there first and tapped the ball into the unprotected net for a 2-0 Bishop lead.

Wall finished off the scoring in the 66th minute, running down a long ball from senior midfielder Jordan Halloran (Springfield/Catholic Central) and finishing the chance for a 3-0 Bishop lead.

Ohio Wesleyan, which outshot Rose-Hulman, 15-0, in the first half, finished with a 21-3 advantage in shots. Neither senior Richard Ott (Norwalk) nor freshman Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) was tested during their respective halves in the Bishop goal. Cheung finished with 4 saves for the Engineers.

Friday's first game also included a pair of goals in rapid-fire succession, but in this instance, each team scored once.

Alma took a 1-0 lead when Cameron Alman set up Matt Bauhof for a goal in the 30th minute.

Less than a minute later, the Yeomen drew a foul and off the restart, Oberlin's Skyler Dum hit a 22-yard rocket into the corner of the Fighting Scot goal, and while both teams would generate opportunities, the second half and overtime periods would not produce further scoring.

Both teams collected 17 shots in the game, with Oberlin's Zach Lipshultz making 4 saves and Alma's Jon Nowak stopping 2 shots.
