Oct. 2, 2009

[ Travis Wall ]Sophomore midfielder Travis Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) set up the game-winning goal, then scored an insurance goal 22 seconds later to lift second-ranked Ohio Wesleyan over Hiram in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Friday night at Roy Rike Field.

The Bishops attacked the Hiram goal early and often, with Wall sending a shot whistling just outside the left post less than 20 seconds into the game, and sending a pair of headers wide in the first 10 minutes of action.

Senior back Matt Giannetti (Montclair, N.J.) had a look at the Terrier goal after a Bishop restart, but Hiram keeper Joe Tatum was there for the save in the 28th minute.

Ohio Wesleyan had another flurry of shots early in the second half, with the Terrier defense blocking shots by junior forward Tyler Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) and junior midfielder Ryan Harmanis (Hilliard/Davidson) before a drive by senior midfielder Blake Pifer (Fleming/Ada) went wide right.

The Bishops took the lead after a Hiram foul in the 66th minute. Travis Wall took the restart and sent the ball ahead to sophomore midfielder Dylan Stone (Easton, Conn./Barlow), who finished the chance from the left side.

After a foul and a yellow card were assessed to David Mason, Ohio Wesleyan had another restart in the Hiram end, and this time it was junior back Eric Laipple (Westerville/South) who started the play and Travis Wall who finished it for a 2-0 lead with 24:03 left in regulation time.

Hiram rallied, collecting 5 shots during the final 11 minutes of play, but freshman Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) made a pair of saves in the Ohio Wesleyan goal to protect the lead.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Hiram, 23-8. Hendricks finished with 2 saves, and Tatum had 2 saves for Hiram.
