Oct. 28, 2009

[ Travis Wall ]Sophomore midfielder Travis Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) collected 2 goals and junior forward Tyler Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) had a goal and an assist as top-ranked Ohio Wesleyan defeated Wittenberg in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday at Roy Rike Field.

With the win, Ohio Wesleyan clinches the NCAC championship, the Bishops' second straight, fifth in the last 6 years, and 18th overall in the 26 seasons of NCAC competition. Ohio Wesleyan will be the No. 1 seed in next week's conference tournament and will host a tournament semifinal game on Wednesday.

Ohio Wesleyan had several looks at the Wittenberg goal during the first 20 minutes of play, but the Bishops were not able to translate those chances into goals.

Wittenberg keeper Michael Lambeck made an outstanding save on a shot by Travis Wall in the 24th minute to keep the game scoreless. Lambeck also denied a shot by sophomore forward Matt Bonfini (Dublin/Coffman) in the 29th minute.

The Tigers nearly took the lead in the 34th minute when Steven Fitzpatrick's shot appeared to be headed inside the left post, only to be cleared away by junior back Eric Laipple (Westerville/South).

The Wall brothers teamed up to give Ohio Wesleyan the lead in the 42nd minute. From the middle of the field, Travis Wall dished the ball to Tyler Wall on the left side, then took a return pass and finished the chance from right in front of the Wittenberg goal for a 1-0 Bishop lead.

Tyler Wall made it 2-0 early in the second half, dribbling in from the left side of the Wittenberg penalty area and blistering a shot into the Tiger net in the 62nd minute.

Senior forward Eric Francis (Alliance/Marlington) set up the Bishops' final goal, centering the ball to Travis Wall. Lambeck made a good play to get his hands on Wall's shot, but couldn't control the ball and it continued inside the right post for a 3-0 Bishop lead.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Wittenberg, 31-5. Senior Richard Ott (Norwalk) had 1 save in the first half, and freshman Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) completed the shutout for Ohio Wesleyan. Lambeck finished with 5 saves for Wittenberg.
