Ohio Wesleyan 2, Allegheny 0

Oct. 31, 2009

[ Brian Greene ]Junior back Brian Greene (Beavercreek) and junior back Eric Laipple (Westerville/South) scored goals to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Allegheny in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday in Meadville, Pa.

The shutout was the 17th of the season for the Battling Bishops, breaking the school record of 16 set in 1991.

Ohio Wesleyan finishes the regular season having allowed only 2 goals to set an NCAA all-divisions record for fewest goals allowed in regular-season play, bettering the mark of 3 set by Macalester (Minn.) in 1997 and matched by York (Pa.) in 2008. The previous Ohio Wesleyan record was 5 goals allowed in 16 games during the 2006 season.

The win also is Ohio Wesleyan's 23rd in a row in NCAC competition, tying the conference record set by Ohio Wesleyan from 1998-2001.

The Bishops struck quickly on Saturday, earning a pair of corner kicks during the first 80 seconds of play. After the second corner, shots by junior forward Tyler Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) and sophomore midfielder Travis Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) were blocked, but Greene scored from a scramble in front of the Gator net to give Ohio Wesleyan a 1-0 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan would go on to outshoot Allegheny, 13-1, during the first half, but the Bishops were not able to add to the lead until the 71st minute, when Laipple scored from inside the Gator penalty area after a header attempt by sophomore midfielder Dylan Stone (Easton, Conn./Barlow) was blocked.

The Bishops outshot the Gators, 26-4. Freshman Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) recorded 2 saves in the Bishop goal. Andrew Shirley finished with 6 saves for the Gators.

Ohio Wesleyan will be the No. 1 seed in next week's conference tournament and will host fourth-seeded Hiram in a tournament semifinal game on Wednesday.
