1st of 9 at NCAC Relays

[ Sean Patrick ]Junior Sean Patrick (Delaware/Hayes), freshman Jake Eldridge (London), and freshman Silas Jolliff (Cardington/Cardington-Lincoln) helped 2 relay teams set meet records, and senior Steve Brown (Redford Township, Mich./Redford) surpassed a national qualifying standard in helping the Bishops successfully defend their North Coast Athletic Conference Relays title at the NCAC Relays meet on Saturday in Granville.

Ohio Wesleyan won the meet with 104 points to 76 for runner-up Wabash. Wittenberg finished in third place with 49 points, followed by Oberlin (46), Wooster and Denison (37 1/2), Allegheny and Earlham (34), and Kenyon (13). The meet consists of relays, running events and field events, with the running events and field events scored by ranking the combined efforts of each school's top 2 participants.

The championship is the Bishops' fourth NCAC Relays title in the last 5 seasons.

Eldridge, Patrick, and Jolliff combined with junior Jordon Exeter (Toronto, Ontario/Mercersburg (Pa.) Academy) to win the 800-meter relay in a meet-record time of 1:30.35.

The trio teamed with freshman Matt Martin (New Brighton, Pa./Riverside) to win the 1600-meter relay in a meet-record time of 3:24.66.

Brown clocked the day's best effort in the 55-meter hurdles, turning in a time of :07.67 to surpass the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III championship meet to be held March 12-13 at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. He combined with sophomore David Franklin (Reynoldsburg) to win the 55-meter hurdles relay with a total of 15:95.

Senior David Burke (Hudson) was on 3 first-place relay teams, combining with Exeter to win the long jump relay with a total of 41-7 3/4, teaming with junior Parone Mulrain (Chicago, Ill./Latin School) to win the triple jump relay with a total of 85-2 3/4, and pairing with freshman Stephen Haynes (Crestview, Fla./Niceville) to win the high jump relay with a total of 11-11 1/2.

The Bishop 3200-meter relay team of junior Kyle Herman (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls), senior Matthew MacKenzie (Franklin, Mass.), sophomore Kale Booher (Covington/Newton), and freshman Shane Brandt (Painesville/Riverside) won its event in 8:01.19.

Other standouts for the Bishops included the distance medley relay team of sophomore Sharif Kronemer (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook), junior Kody Law (Reynoldsburg), sophomore Kyle Lemke (Loudonville), and senior Christian Schlabach (Wooster/Triway), which clocked a 10:26.68 to break the school record of 10:32.00 set last year by Schlabach, Law, Herman, and Booher.

The Bishop sprint medley relay team of Haynes, Brown, senior Bryce Mathias (Centerburg), and Schlabach finished second, as did the 5000-meter relay team of sophomore Evan Hitchcock (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) and junior Cody Morrison (Caldwell) and the shot put relay team of senior Kyle Faris (Olmsted Falls) and sophomore Jon Rux (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View).
