Anderson 3, Ohio Wesleyan 0

Sept. 16, 2009

[ Lainey Kekic ]Freshman outside hitter Meg Weissenberger (Toledo/Central Catholic) and senior outside hitter Kristin Kovach (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) highlighted the Ohio Wesleyan offense in a non-conference loss to Anderson on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Anderson won the match by scores of 25-12, 25-17, 25-15.

The Ravens jumped to a 7-1 lead in the first set, with Carol Weatherford and Kate McCollum each contributing a kill and a block assist along the way. The Bishops cut the gap to 8-4 as freshman middle hitter Ashley Haynes (Norton) and junior setter Jenna Teeters (Johnstown) combined on a block, but Anderson gradually pulled away.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 6-4 lead in the second set, with Weissenberger collecting a pair of kills and Kovach adding another. The Ravens rallied behind Tara Roberts and Sydnie Garber, who had a kill and a block apiece as Anderson scored the next 7 points of the match to take the lead for good. The Bishops closed to within 13-11 with the help of kills by Weissenberger and junior middle hitter Lainey Kekic (Canfield/Western Reserve) and an ace by Kovach, but Anderson went on a 6-1 run and kept the Bishops at arm's length for the remainder of the set.

The Bishops overcame an early deficit to trail, 10-9, in the third set, with Teeters contributing a kill and an ace and Kovach adding a kill. Anderson countered by scoring the next 6 points, 3 of those coming on kills by Jessica Berlin. Ohio Wesleyan cut the margin to 17-13 on a pair of aces by junior setter Sarah Marshall (Lima/Senior), but that would be as close as the Bishops would come.

Weissenberger led Ohio Wesleyan with 7 kills, while Kovach followed with 6 and Kekic added 5. Marshall compiled 17 assists. Defensive leaders for the Bishops included junior outside hitter Alexa Bean (Columbus/Upper Arlington) with a team-high 14 digs and Haynes with a pair of blocks
