Muskingum 3, Ohio Wesleyan 0

[ Lainey Kekic ]Junior middle hitter Lainey Kekic (Canfield/Western Reserve) and freshman outside hitter Meg Weissenberger (Toledo/Central Catholic) stood out for the Ohio Wesleyan offense in a non-conference loss to Muskingum on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Muskingum won the match by scores of 25-22, 25-19, 25-20.

Kekic contributed a kill and a block assist as the Bishops raced to a 4-1 lead in the first set, and Ohio Wesleyan still led, 18-15, on a block by Kekic and freshman middle hitter Hannah Benzing (Findlay/Liberty Benton). The Muskies came back to tie the set at 18-18 on a kill by Gretchen van der Sluijs, and after the teams traded points 4 times to leave the set deadlocked at 22-22, Muskingum scored the last 3 points, getting kills from McKensie Smith and Katie Hayman, to win the set.

In the second set, the Bishops were within 10-9 when the Muskies went on a 13-4 run, with van der Sluijs and Lauren Tullis collecting 3 kills apiece along the way. Ohio Wesleyan rallied to come within 24-19 as junior setter Jenna Teeters (Johnstown) recorded a pair of kills and senior outside hitter Kristin Kovach (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) added another, but the Muskies got the final point to end the set.

Weissenberger blasted 3 kills to help Ohio Wesleyan take a 9-4 lead in the third set, and the Bishops still led, 15-10, when Smith had a pair of kills to help Muskingum rally to tie the score at 16-16, and a block by Michelle Cochron helped the Muskies take a 19-16 lead. Freshman middle hitter Ashley Haynes (Norton) delivered a pair of kills to keep the Bishops in the match, but Muskingum was able to hold off the Ohio Wesleyan charge and ended the match with a kill from Diana Biller.

Kekic led the Bishops with 10 kills, while Weissenberger finished with 9 and Kovach added 8. Teeters collected 30 assists on the night.

Defensive leaders for Ohio Wesleyan included Weissenberger with a team-high 21 digs, junior outside hitter Alexa Bean (Columbus/Upper Arlington) with 11 digs, and Kekic with a team-best 3 blocks.
