Wittenberg 3, Ohio Wesleyan 0

[ Meg Weissenberger ]Freshman outside hitter Meg Weissenberger (Toledo/Central Catholic) led the Ohio Wesleyan offense in a North Coast Athletic Conference match against Wittenberg on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Wittenberg won the match by scores of 25-20, 25-5, 25-16.

The Bishops jumped to a 4-1 lead in the first set with the help of a kill by junior middle hitter Lainey Kekic (Canfield/Western Reserve) and a service ace from senior outside hitter Kristin Kovach (Chagrin Falls/Kenston). Ohio Wesleyan still led, 16-13, when the Tigers went on an 8-2 run that included 3 kills from Amy Cox and additional kills from Kimmie Dyer and Christine Simpson. The Bishops came back to within 21-19 on a Weissenberger kill, but Wittenberg closed out the set with kills from Simpson and Katie Sumner.

The Tigers were firing on all cylinders during the second set, taking a 5-0 lead as Sumner contributed a kill and an ace and Dyer, Katherine Yuskewich, and Cox collected kills. Ohio Wesleyan was still within 9-4 when Wittenberg scored the next 14 points, with Dyer racking up 7 kills, to put the set out of reach.

Yuskewich led Wittenberg with 3 kills in the early going of the third set, helping the Tigers to a 5-2 lead. Freshman libero Madison Stofcheck (Richwood/North Union) zipped a service ace to bring the Bishops within 9-7, but Wittenberg responded with kills from Megan Lutz and Simpson on the way to a 17-10 lead. Ohio Wesleyan bounced back, scoring the next 4 points on a pair of Weissenberger kills, a kill by freshman middle hitter Hannah Benzing (Findlay/Liberty Benton), and a Kekic service ace, but the Tigers went on an 8-2 run that featured a pair of Cox kills to end the match.

Weissenberger led the Bishops with 6 kills, while Kekic and junior setter Sarah Marshall (Lima/Senior) had 3 apiece. Marshall also collected 13 assists on the night.

Defensive leaders for Ohio Wesleyan included junior outside hitter Alexa Bean (Columbus/Upper Arlington) with a team-high 12 digs, and Weissenberger with 9 digs.
