Ohio Wesleyan 73, Kenyon 68

[ Kayla Gordon ]Junior post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) buried a tie-breaking 3-pointer with :13 to play, then stole the ball to set up a pair of clinching free throws to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Kenyon in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday in Gambier.

The win kept the Bishops unbeaten in the NCAC and snapped a 9-game losing streak against the Ladies. It also marked Ohio Wesleyan's first win in Gambier since Jan. 2, 2004, a span of 8 straight games.

Ohio Wesleyan trailed, 66-63, after Kenyon's Kayla Ernst scored with 1:41 to play.

Gordon scored on a putback to bring the Bishops within 66-65, then senior guard Rachel Seibel (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) stole the ball and junior guard Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) scored on the ensuing break to give Ohio Wesleyan a 67-66 lead. Cordell was fouled on the play, and converted the 3-point play for a 68-66 Bishop lead with :54 left.

Kenyon tied the game at 68-68 on a Morgan Korinek lay-in with :38 remaining.

Gordon knocked down a 3-pointer with :13 left, then stole the ball from Laurel Stokes with :02 left. Cordell was fouled and hit a pair of free throws with :01 to play for the 73-68 final.

Junior guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) and Seibel hit 3-pointers in the first minute of play for a quick 6-0 Bishop lead, but Kenyon came back to tie the game at 10-10 on a 3-point play by Korinek with 14:52 left in the first half.

Gordon, Quigney, and sophomore guard Shannon Delaney (Delaware/Olentangy) hit 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan opened up a 31-21 lead with 5:36 to play in the period, and the Bishops led, 36-24, after another Gordon 3-pointer with 2:58 left.

The Ladies ended the first half with a 7-2 run, and Korinek scored 7 straight points to open the second half. When Kathleen Williams and Kat Powers followed with baskets, Kenyon had taken a 42-40 lead with 15:37 to play in regulation time.

Ohio Wesleyan broke a 50-50 tie with a Cordell jumper from the lane and a Quigney 3-pointer, but Kenyon responded with 8 straight points that included a pair Laurel Stokes baskets and hoops by Ernst and Korinek to take a 60-57 lead with 5:08 to go, and Kenyon still led, 66-63, after Ernst's basket with 1:41 left, setting the stage for the game's dramatic conclusion.

Quigney led the Bishops with 21 points, while Gordon finished with 19 points and Cordell scored 17 points. Seibel snared a team-high 6 rebounds and senior guard Lauren Gentene (Mason) led the Bishops with 3 assists.

Korinek led Kenyon with 22 points, and Ernst added 13 points for the Ladies.
