Jan. 23, 2010

[ Tyler Cordell ]Junior guard Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) hit a 3-pointer and a lay-in during a game-opening 9-0 run and Ohio Wesleyan went on to defeat Earlham in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday in Richmond, Ind.

Sophomore post Dany Finck (Hilliard/Darby) opened the day's scoring with a lay-in and Cordell followed with a 3-pointer. Junior guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) followed with a jumper before Cordell's putback basket gave the Bishops a 9-0 lead with 16:16 left in the first half.

Meanwhile, the Bishop defense clamped down on the Quaker offense, forcing turnovers on Earlham's first 5 possessions. Earlham did not get off a shot until after Ohio Wesleyan had built the 9-0 lead. Jayana Sims put the Quakers on the scoreboard with a lay-in at the 15:41 mark, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with hoops by junior post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) and Cordell to open up a 13-2 lead.

Earlham rallied to within 13-5 on a Sims free throw and a basket from Nikki Barrett, and the Quakers were still within 17-9 nearing the midway point of the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan then scored the next 5 points, collecting a jumper by senior guard Lauren Gentene (Mason), a free throw by freshman post Helen Scheblo (Canal Winchester/St. Francis de Sales) and a Finck lay-in in a span of less than 2 minutes to stretch the margin to 22-9.

The Bishops extended the lead to 20 points with the help of a 6-0 burst later in the half, with junior post Kaylie Titus (East Hampton, N.Y.) hitting a basket, Finck contributing another lay-in, and freshman guard Kandis Walker (Utica) sinking a pair of free throws to make it a 32-12 game.

Ohio Wesleyan led by a margin of 36-18 at the break, and the Bishops opened the second half with an 11-2 run to put the game out of reach, with Finck hitting a lay-in and a pair of free throws, Quigney sinking a 3-pointer, and Cordell and Gordon adding baskets.

Cordell led the Bishops with 22 points and 5 rebounds, while Finck finished with 15 points and Quigney had a team-high 4 assists.
