Ohio Wesleyan 76, Denison 69

[ Kayla Gordon ]Junior post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) scored 4 straight points to kick off a 9-2 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay on the way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Denison on Sunday in Granville.

The Big Red had tied the game at 61-61 on a pair of Shaina Kaiser free throws with 4:21 left in regulation time.

Gordon answered with a lay-in on Ohio Wesleyan's ensuing possession, then blocked Kaiser's 3-point shot on the other end of the floor before hitting a pair of free throws for a 65-61 Bishop lead with 3:25 to go.

After Denison's Christina Myers and senior guard Rachel Seibel (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) traded lay-ins, junior guard Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) hit the second of 2 free throws and junior guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) sank a pair of charity tosses to extend the Bishop lead to 70-63 with 1:17 remaining.

Quigney and Cordell each hit 2 free throws during the final minute of play, keeping the Big Red from coming closer than 5 points.

Ohio Wesleyan took a quick 4-0 lead on baskets by sophomore post Dany Finck (Hilliard/Darby) and Gordon, and the Bishops still led, 23-20, when Gordon knocked down a 3-pointer and Quigney contributed a fast-break lay-in and a jumper from the lane to extend the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 30-20 with 8:06 left in the first half.

The Bishops led by as many as 13 points, that coming on Quigney's 3-pointer that made it a 39-26 game with 1:04 to play in the period.

Denison rallied in the second half, closing to within 43-39 on Serafina Nuzzo's lay-in with 15:58 left in regulation time, then putting together an 8-2 run that included a pair of Nuzzo baskets and a pair of hoops by Lucy Follansbee to tie the game at 55-55 with 7:38 to play.

Ohio Wesleyan recaptured the lead with a Cordell jumper and a pair of free throws and a basket from Quigney, only to see the hosts answer with a 6-0 run that included a Nuzzo basket and a pair of free throws and a basket by Kaiser, evening the score at 61.

Cordell led the Bishops with 23 points and 8 assists. Gordon finished with 19 points and had a team-high 7 rebounds, and Quigney also scored 19 points.

Nuzzo and Kaiser scored 19 points apiece for Denison, with Nuzzo grabbing a game-high 13 boards.
