Ohio Wesleyan 62, Allegheny 59

[ Pam Quigney ]Junior guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) scored 6 points and sophomore post Dany Finck (Hilliard/Darby) had 2 points as Ohio Wesleyan put together an 8-2 run to end the game and defeat Allegheny in the Bishops' North Coast Athletic Conference opener on Saturday in Meadville, Pa.

The Gators had taken a 57-54 lead on a lay-in by Jill Gregory with 2:50 left in regulation time.

After a Bishop miss, junior guard Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) stole the ball and fed Quigney for a lay-in to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 57-56 with 2:22 to go.

Another Cordell steal followed, and Finck followed with a pair of free throws that gave the Bishops a 58-57 lead with 2:04 to play.

Quigney added a pair of free throws to increase the lead to 60-57 with 1:01 left in regulation time.

Allegheny closed to within 60-59 when Gregory hit a pair of free throws after an offensive rebound with :32 to play, but Quigney got those points back by sinking a pair of free throws at the :17 mark.

The Gators had a chance to tie the game, but 3-pointers by Gregory and Britni Mohney were off the mark.

Allegheny built an early 14-6 lead behind the early scoring of Heidi Goeller and Emilie Simone, who combined for 10 of the Gators' first 14 points.

Ohio Wesleyan stormed back with a 12-0 run, collecting a pair of Quigney baskets, a lay-in by junior post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) and a pair of Cordell free throws before back-to-back buckets by freshman post Adjoni Williams (Cleveland/Central Catholic) gave the Bishops an 18-14 lead with just under 6 minutes to play in the half.

Three-pointers by Brittany Bell and Mohney capped an 8-0 Allegheny run that gave the Gators a 31-24 lead late in the period.

Allegheny still led, 35-29, early in the second half when Ohio Wesleyan responded with a 7-0 run to take the lead, with senior guard Rachel Seibel (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) and Gordon scoring buckets and Quigney hitting a 3-pointer to give the Bishops a 36-35 lead with 16:35 left in regulation time.

The next 14 minutes of play were of the edge-of-the-seat variety, featuring numerous ties and lead changes. Ohio Wesleyan led by 3 points on a single occasion, that at 42-39 on a putback by freshman post Helen Scheblo (Canal Winchester/St. Francis de Sales) with 13:50 left, while Allegheny built a pair of 3-point leads, the first at 47-44 on Simone's lay-in with 8:06 remaining, and the second at 57-54 with 2:50 to play.

Finck led the Bishops with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Quigney finished with 15 points. Cordell dished out a team-leading 7 assists.

Gregory led Allegheny with 17 points, Simone had 14 points and a team-high 8 rebounds, and Shannon Culbreath scored 10 points.
