Ohio Wesleyan 3, St. John Fisher 0

Sept. 1, 2009

[ Belle Madison ]Sophomore midfielder Belle Madison (Charlevoix, Mich.) put the Bishops on the scoreboard, and junior forward Erica Lowell (Bay Village/Bay) had a goal and an assist as Ohio Wesleyan pulled away during the second half to post a non-conference win over St. John Fisher in the Bishops' season opener on Tuesday at Roy Rike Field.

Ohio Wesleyan had the first dangerous scoring chance of the game, earning a corner kick in the 14th minute. Senior defender Megan Goodrich (Brecksville/Laurel School) sent the ball into the penalty area, and freshman midfielder Samantha Epling (Yellow Springs/Dayton Carroll) had an open look at the right post, but Epling's shot was cleared off the line by Cardinal defender Lauren Dahl to preserve the scoreless tie.

The Bishops fared better on their next opportunity. Senior defender Carolyn Tallman (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) advanced the ball up the left sideline and sent a centering pass into the box to Madison, who headed it past Cardinal keeper Ashley Martin to give Ohio Wesleyan a 1-0 lead with 25:57 left in the first half.

Martin kept the game close in the 33rd minute when sophomore forward Makinzie Krebsbach (Vadnais Heights, Minn./Totino-Grace) was open in the penalty area only to see Martin come out and break up the play. The loose ball went to senior midfielder Brooke Whitesell (Dublin/Scioto), but her shot was blocked by Martin and the Cardinals were able to defuse the threat.

Ohio Wesleyan added to its lead in the second half when junior defender Victoria King (Westerville/Worthington Christian) sent a long ball ahead to Lowell, who ran it down and zipped a shot into the St. John Fisher net, and the Bishops iced the game in the 77th minute, when Lowell found junior midfielder Chelsea Keller (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) for a score.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot St. John Fisher, 20-4. Junior Laura VanHoey (Rochester, Mich.) started in the Bishop goal, and freshman Margot Klepetko (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) had 1 save during the second half. Martin finished with 4 saves for the Cardinals.
