Wittenberg 1, Ohio Wesleyan 0

Sept. 30, 2009

[ Belle Madison ]Wittenberg's Sheryl Chambers scored the game's only goal as the Tigers edged Ohio Wesleyan in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Wednesday at Roy Rike Field.

The Bishops had the game's first good scoring chance, earning a corner kick in the 12th minute. Senior defender Megan Goodrich (Brecksville/Laurel School) sent the ball into the box, and sophomore midfielder Belle Madison (Charlevoix, Mich.) that looked like it was headed inside the left post, but Wittenberg defender Lauren McMahon cleared the ball off the line to preserve the scoreless tie.

Midway through the half, it was the Ohio Wesleyan defense coming through, blocking a pair of shots on successive Wittenberg corner kicks, and forcing a shot wide on the Tigers' third straight corner kick.

Chambers gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute. With the ball deep in the Ohio Wesleyan end, Chambers moved toward the top left corner of the penalty box to create space, then turned and fired a shot into the right side of the net.

Ohio Wesleyan got a few looks during the second half, but Tiger keeper Melissa Gartner came up with all 4 of her saves during the period. Gartner stopped a pair of shots by freshman midfielder Jessie Huschart (Columbus/Hilliard Davidson), a header by freshman midfielder Samantha Epling (Yellow Springs/Dayton Carroll), and a shot by junior midfielder Chelsea Keller (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy).

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Wittenberg, 15-13. Junior Laura VanHoey (Rochester, Mich.) made 1 save for the Bishops, while Gartner had 4 saves for the Tigers.
