Ohio Wesleyan 2, Wooster 1

Junior midfielder Carly Topper (Novi, Mich./Greenhills) and sophomore midfielder Belle Madison (Charlevoix, Mich.) scored goals as Ohio Wesleyan built a 2-0 lead, and senior defender Megan Goodrich (Brecksville/Laurel School) and sophomore defender Caitlin Zeller (Cuyahoga Falls) made key defensive plays to hold off a Wooster rally as the Bishops took a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Saturday at Roy Rike Field.

Topper gave the Bishops a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, winning the ball in the Wooster end and whistling a shot inside the left post.

Wooster had a good chance at tying the score in the 30th minute when Nicole Himebaugh slotted a diagonal pass that appeared to free Liz Mott on a breakaway, but Zeller got back and broke up the play near the top of the penalty area.

The Fighting Scot defense kept the game close in the 35th minute. Ohio Wesleyan had earned a corner kick, and the delivery from Goodrich appeared to be heading into the goal when a Wooster defender guarding the right post knocked the ball away.

Goodrich had more success on another corner kick early in the second half, sending the ball across the box to the left side, where Madison lined the ball inside the left post to give the Bishops a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute.

Goodrich and Zeller kept the Bishop lead at 2-0 with a flurry of activity in the 79th minute. Himebaugh took a shot that Goodrich cleared away, and on the ensuing corner kick, Mott teed up a shot that Zeller blocked at the right post.

Wooster closed within 2-1 in the 83rd minute when Kelsey Peters fielded a pass from Chantal Koechli and finished the chance inside the penalty area.

The Fighting Scots weren't done, collecting 4 shots in the closing minutes of regulation time, but the Bishop defense was able to protect the lead.

Wooster outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 18-16. Freshman Margot Klepetko (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) made 5 saves for the Bishops, while Michele Ring had 5 saves for the Fighting Scots.
