Oberlin 4, Ohio Wesleyan 3

Oct. 19, 2011

[ Lauren Bailey ]Sophomore defender Kay Cantwell (Louisville, Ky./Atherton) and junior defender Lauren Bailey (Toledo/Ottawa Hills) scored goals to give Ohio Wesleyan a 2-0 halftime lead, but Oberlin rallied for 4 second-half scores to defeat the Bishops in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday at Selby Stadium.

The Bishops took the lead late in the first half, when junior midfielder Calina Hilyard (Columbus/Upper Arlington) maneuvered the ball past Oberlin keeper Kiran Puri and centered it to a wide-open Cantwell, who tapped the ball into the unprotected cage in the 28th minute.

Bailey made it 2-0 in the 31st minute, weaving through the Oberlin defense before firing a shot into the back of the cage.

Oberlin got on the scoreboard early in the second half. The Yeowomen had earned a penalty corner, and Claire Yeski blasted a shot from the top of the circle. Ohio Wesleyan sophomore Emily Temple (Dublin/Scioto) was there to make the save, but the ball caromed to the left post, where Karin Yoshida, who had injected the ball on the penalty corner, was waiting, and Yoshida knocked home the rebound to bring the visitors within 2-1.

Less than a minute later, Oberlin nearly tied the game after another penalty corner, but Yeski's shot was cleared off the line by sophomore defender Jenna Ortega (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West).

The Yeowomen pulled even in the 48th minute, when Eloise Reid's drive from a tough angle on the left side bounced off an Ohio Wesleyan defender and high into the cage.

Bailey helped the Bishops regain the lead, working free in the right side of the Oberlin circle and crossing the ball to freshman attacker Colleen Bodee (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor), who slipped a shot into the left side of the cage to make it 3-2 in the 54th minute.

Oberlin answered less than 2 minutes later, when Jodi Helsel made a spectacular run of nearly half the field, and finished the chance with 19:38 to play in regulation time.

Yoshida tallied what proved to be the game-winner with exactly 9 minutes left in regulation time, with Reid sending a pass to the left post and Yoshida tapping it home for a 4-3 Oberlin lead.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Oberlin, 18-16. Temple finished with 2 saves for Ohio Wesleyan. Puri made 5 saves in the Yeowomen cage.
