![]() Wittenberg 2, Ohio Wesleyan 1 Oct. 15, 2011 The loss ended the Bishops' 5-game winning streak, the team's longest since the 2005 season. Ohio Wesleyan had the best scoring chance of the first half when sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Riggio (Itasca, Ill./Lake Park) sent a through ball that freed sophomore midfielder Emily Knapp (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) on a breakaway, but Wittenberg keeper Melissa Gartner broke up the play near the top of the penalty area. The Tigers had the best chances of the second half, with Sheryl Chambers getting an open look from the left side but sending her shot across the goal mouth in the 64th minute, and 3 minutes later, when Katiley Striebel beat a defender along the end line but had her centering pass blocked by the Bishop defense. The ball caromed to a wide-open Megan Utter, but her shot sliced outside the right post. Wittenberg took the lead in the 73rd minute when Chambers broke in from the left side and fired a shot that Ohio Wesleyan sophomore Hannah Zacharias (Marysville) blocked. The ball bounced across to the right side, where Cassandra Howell tapped it into the unprotected goal. With the clock ticking down to 9 minutes left in regulation time, the Bishops threatened, sending the ball into the penalty area. A header by senior forward Makinzie Krebsbach (Vadnais Heights, Minn./Totino-Grace) was short of the goal, and Knapp's follow-up header was played by Tiger defender Lauren E. McMahon, who got an arm on the ball, earning a yellow card and sending Madison to the penalty spot. Madison converted the kick to even the score with 8:54 to play. Ohio Wesleyan had shots by junior midfielder Jessie Huschart (Columbus/Hilliard Davidson) and Riggio in the closing minutes, but Gardner was there both times to post the save. Madison had the only shot of the first overtime period, with her header off a Knapp crossing pass going wide left in the 94th minute. The Tigers would have the only shot of the second extra session, and that would be the game-winner. Striebel won the ball from a Bishop defender just outside the top of the penalty area and centered it to Utter, who finished the chance at the 104:07 mark. Ohio Wesleyan outshot Wittenberg, 21-19. Zacharias finished with 6 saves in the Bishop goal, while Gartner recorded 9 saves in the Tiger cage. |
