Miller Named Ohio Wesleyan Golf Coach

Sept. 2, 2009

[ Ian Miller ]DELAWARE, OHIO -- Ian Miller, a Professional Golfers' Association of America professional for 9 years, has been named head coach of the golf team at Ohio Wesleyan University, it was announced by athletics director Roger Ingles.

“I’m very excited to be here at my alma mater,” Miller said. “I'm excited to be in an atmosphere where I can teach the student-athletes and learn from them. I do have high expectations, based on what Jon was able to do with the program the last 10 years.”

Miller replaces Jon Whithaus, who left to become an assistant coach at Duke University. Under Whithaus, Ohio Wesleyan won 8 of the last 10 North Coast Athletic Conference championships and finished in the top 10 of the NCAA Division III championship tournament 7 times.

"Ian was an outstanding student-athlete at Ohio Wesleyan and a level 1 PGA professional," Ingles said. "We couldn't be more thrilled to have him here. He's a quality person, an outstanding coach, and someone we think will be a great recruiter and centerpiece for our golf program."

Miller spent the last 3 years as head professional at The Quarry Golf Club in Canton, Ohio, teaching and handling all aspects of course management.

Prior to that, he was assistant professional at Plum Brook Golf Club in Sandusky, Ohio, for 6 years, and began his professional career with a year at The Heritage Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

He has been a PGA member since 1994, continuing his education with PGA classes and seminars on the way to a virtual graduate degree in golf.

Miller has continued his playing career as well, competing in PGA national championship events in 2007 and 2009.

Miller is a 1999 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan and was an All-America selection in golf in both of his years as a Battling Bishop. His junior year, he reeled off a string of 5 straight top-10 finishes and won first-team All-NCAC honors. He finished 21st at the NCAA Division III tournament and received honorable mention All-America laurels. As a senior, he tied a school record by shooting a 67 at Penn State, becoming the first Ohio Wesleyan player in over 40 years to hit that score, and went on to finish fourth at the NCAA Division III tournament and earn first-team All-America honors as Ohio Wesleyan tied for eighth place in the national team standings. He began his college career at Kent State University, then transferred to Ohio Wesleyan after 2 years.

Miller is a native of Mount Vernon, Ohio.
